Just rented it on DVD. It didnt come to theaters around me, so it was my first chance to see it. Personally, I really liked it and enjoyed it. That being said, I would say that about 70% of people who will see this movie will hate it.
For those of you who dont know, Richard Kelly directed what, in my opinion, is one of the masterpieces of 90's cinema in Donnie Darko. That film stands as my favorite of all time. This was his follow up to Darko, and even I will admit, it wasnt nearly as good. However, Kelly doesnt play by the rules, and watching this movie is worth the time in my opinion just to admire the risks that he takes in both his writing and his directing. In Darko, Kelly learned that people like his vision. With Southland, he will have to learn how to harness his abstract thinking if he wants future commercial or critical success.
For a film that I have seemingly dissed so far, I really enjoyed it. It is wierd, and I mean REALLY wierd, and is a modern day retelling of The Book of Revelations. Some great eye candy with Mandy Moore and Sarah Michell Geller (and actually Bai Ling is smokin in it too) and Sean William Scott gets to try being serious for once, and does a good job. The highlight of the movie, however, is Justin Timberlake tripping on a drug called Liquid Karma and singing a song by The Killers. See that scene for yourself here.
Ayone else see this film? If not, and you want to see something that you may love, may hate, but no matter what should apprecaite the filmmaking, then give this one a shot.
and yes i know it got panned by critics, like i said, this is not for everyone.

I really liked the movie. I knew more about the movie by reading the back of the video. After seeing Southland, it becomes impossible to explain.
I think I'm able to explain it without giving away anything...
It takes place after a terrorist event but it's not a political movie. It kind of satirizes what the typical American response to this event would be...but....this movie isn't simply a satire. It has comic book movie elements but there's much more going on than the average comic book movie. You got a little Sci-Fi but...yeah, you guessed it...it's not like anything you'd see on the Sci Fi Channel.
Oh yeah...and you get to hear Dwayne Johnson say "I'm a pimp; and pimps don't commit suicide." You pretty much HAVE to rent this now, right?
I didn't know that was Justin Timberlake. Damn. He acted that very well. I thought it was Ryan Phillippe.
