The Forgotten 500
It's not written particularly well in a technical sense, but the story is absolutely terrific. It's about the rescue of hundreds of airmen who had to bail out of their planes over Yugoslavia attempting to return to Italy from bombing runs to the oil fields the Germans held in Romania.
It talks about the death defying things those brave men did to even get out of their planes (many did not), how the Serbian people treated them like their own people (families would sleep in the barn so Americans could sleep in their beds.....one Serbian guard stood out in the rain for hours because he did not want to come into the house to wake up a sleeping American), and how they organized a rescue working with the OSS. They even had to build a run way without drawing the attention of the Germans.
Amazing story about perseverance and toughness....cunning and luck.
It is not a shoot 'em up type book, it doesn't struggle at ALL to keep your attention.
