All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) showing on Turner Classic Movies channel Saturday Feb 14th @ 8 pm eastern/5 pm pacific time. the Erich Maria Remarque novel one of the most powerful anti-war stories ever and is timeless. stars Lew Ayres as Paul Baumer, Louis Wolheim as Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky and John Wray as Corporal Himmelstoss
I always believed that the novel, along with Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" and George Orwell's "1984", should be required reading in high schools world wide. first the book and then the movie were SO powerful they were banned not only in 1930's Fascist countries like Italy and Germany but also many of the European Democracies including France and even Australia
this movie is one of the all time Hollywood greats and for money is a "must see" at least once. also excellent is the 1979 made for TV version with Richard Thomas as Paul, Ernest Borgnine as Stanislaus Kat and Ian Holm as Himmelstoss. in some ways it's even better as Holm esp "fills out" the Himmelstoss.role more than Wray in the original
also the same night on TCM isDisraeli (1929) with George Arliss in the title role for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. I also highly recommend it

Ernst Jünger, (born March 29, 1895, Heidelberg, Ger.—died Feb. 16, 1998, Wilflingen), German novelist and essayist, an ardent militarist who was one of the most complex and contradictory figures in 20th-century German literature.
Jünger joined the French Foreign Legion in 1913, but his father had him brought back to Germany. In 1914 he volunteered for the German Army at the outbreak of World War I and served as an officer on the Western Front throughout the conflict. As a soldier Jünger was conspicuous for his bravery: he was wounded at least seven times, and in 1918 he was awarded the Pour le Mérite medal, Germany’s highest military decoration. After the war he published In Stahlgewittern (1920; The Storm of Steel), a novel in the form of a diary; it contains vivid recollections of his life in the trenches and his experiences in combat as a company commander. In a dispassionate, matter-of-fact voice, Jünger describes the heroism and suffering displayed by himself and his fellow soldiers in the brutal fighting on the Western Front. The Storm of Steel was a success with critics and public alike in Germany and other countries. Two years later he published Der Kampf als ... (200 of 517 words)

I agree great movie. I can also recommend the book "The storm of steel" by Ernst Junger. Written in 1920 just after the great war.
