I’m feeling old and dorkier than usual today, so let’s talk about Star Wars, particularly The Empire Strikes Back,
which came out in theatres 30 years ago on May 19. I can still remember standing in line at a trashy strip mall waiting to see it. It was—and still is—awesome.
It’s by far the best of the Star Wars movies and, ironically, the only one George Lucas didn’t direct.
For the record, it goes: 1. Empire. 2. Return of the Jedi. 3. Star Wars. The rest of the prequels don’t even belong on the same list. And really there’s a pretty big gap between Empire and Jedi.
Jedi was really good, especially the Jabba scenes, but the Ewoks keep it from being in Empire’s class.
In Empire we met Yoda and Lando Calrissian. We got to see a glimpse of Darth Vader without his helmet on and learned of the Emperor, one scary dude. The settings were amazing, from Hoth to Cloud City to Degoba. The dialogue was outstanding. Han and Leia’s banter was great. Just an all around outstanding movie.
But I’m wondering how it translates to the younger generation. For you 20 somethings out there, do you enjoy the original Star Wars movies? Or did the new ones really ruin them for you?
May the betting Force be with you this weekend … DP

i was like 13 or 14 when the phantom menace came out, and we waited outside all day skipping school to get tickets. i have also seen the other 2 new ones.
the old ones are still the best but i also think episode 3 revenge of the sith ... where anakin turns bad is a great one.
I think return of the jedi might be my fav from the original 3........ but empire was great too

I agree: Episode 3 was the best of the new ones, but I still didn't think it compared to the first 3. The ending with Vader yelling "Noooooooo!" was just awful.
The beginning of Jedi was great ... the Ewoks wore on me.

Gotta say Empire was the best by far as well, with Jedi 2nd and the original 3rd. The new ones warrant no consideration.
Jedi had the Emporer (awesome) and the Ewoks (not so much). It could've challenged for the top spot had they did something better with the Ewoks. They should've used Wookies instead.
