EQUUS stars one of the best actors of all time, Richard Burton. You haven't seen the film because it was released in 1977 and the acclaim for the film was over looked because Richard Dreyfuss won the Oscar for Best Actor in the Movie THE GOODBYE GIRL instead of Richard Burton's efforts in EQUUS but once you have seen EQUUS you all will agree that it should have been Burton given the Oscar.
The movie is about a Psychiatrist who treats Adolescents and is considered great at his profession. A 17 year old male, Alan, blinded several horses at a stable where he worked on the weekends. Treating Alan brings Burton's character, Martin Dysart, face to face with all of his doubts of his abilities as a psychiatrist, psychaitry in general and his whole thoughts about his life, life in general and self worth.
The plot is intense and uses several psychological theories to present the situation however none of the therories are stated overtly in the film...you have to do reseach on your own to find them...family dynamics and sexual indoctrination are a couple I'll mention but the rest you'll have to research on your own after viewing the film.
There is nudity in the film and Jenny Agutter, who plays Jill Mason, does appear nude in the film so there is some eye candy included with the philosophical and abstract nature of the movie.
It's a must see film. You will only find it on DVD because it hasn't been rereleased in theaters for several years. It is such a great film that I have to mention it in this forum or those of you who actually love great films will never see it. I bought my copy through Amazon but do a search on google and buy it where ever you like shopping. The DVD cost me $9.99 and is worth several times that in entertainment value. If you purchase the film on my recommendation and find that you don't like the film then I might be inclined to give you the cost of the film provided that you can illustrate to me that you watched the entire film with an open mind. dennishopson and Weathered are 2 of the members of the forum I am sure would love the film.
There are a few more films that are "one of the best films you've never seen" that I will be reviewing in the near future.

Ok, we now have the 1st response from someone who followed my recommendation. Anyone reading this post make the effort and order the DVD. This film is not in theaters and probably never will be rereleased again for theaters but it is truely a wonderful movie viewing experience so order the DVD be amazed then come back and post your experience here in this topic.
I am sure Weathered would tell you that he never knew such a film existed and never would have seen the film if it weren't for my recommendation and insistence that he buy the DVD so the rest of you follow his example and order the DVD.

I finally was able to watch Equus. You can keep your money. Very good film. Burton was excellent as the doctor with a bit of a god complex. The internal conflict of him at once feeling threatened by yet enamored with the delusions of his patient was great stuff. So is it safe to assume you've seen both Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Medium Cool? If Equus is your kind of movie I definitely think you'd enjoy these.
