if you liked the series "The Tudors" I think you will enjoy both Anonymous (2011) and To Kill A King (2003). both are set in 1500 and 1600 England.
the basic premise of Anonymous is that William Shakespeare was actually a front for nobleman writer Edward de Vere, The Earl of Oxford BUT it also is heavy on the Elizabethan court "who if fucking who" intrigue of the time. also goes into the political reasons for de Vere writing some of some of his "Shakespear" plays like Richard the Third which was a direct attack on de Vere's enemy at court Robert Cecil the Earl of Salisbury.
kind of "jumps back and forth" in history and it can be somewhat confusing in spots BUT it's VERY well acted by all involved AND gives a good "overview" of Shakespear's most famous plays. it's on STARZ again Monday July 9th @ 10 am, 1 pm, 7:50 pm and 10:50 pm pacific time
To Kill A King covers the post English Civil War rule of Oliver Cromwell (played by Tim Roth) with emphasis on the trial and execution of deposed King Charles I (played by Rupert Everett) after he tried to take back the throne from the Cromwell Republicans. it's on EPIX3 Wednesday July 11th @ 4:15 am pacific time
