just got back from viewing with the Mrs and all we could say was "WOW!!! Just WOW!!!" there is NO WAY this does NOT win every major Oscar, ex for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, this year!!!
Daniel Day-Lewis is OUTSTANDING as President Abraham Lincoln as is Tommy Lee Jones as Republican Congressional leader Thaddeus Stevens, who "whipped" the bill for the 13th Amendment thru Congress. they should BOTH be a LOCK for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. only possable opponent I can see for Tommy Lee Jones is David Strathairn as Secretary of State William H. Seward.
Sally Fields has had enough "press" that she SHOULD win Best Actress altough her part as Mary Todd Lincoln although it's really NOT that big a part in the movie. Steven Spielberg definate Best Director and Tony Kushner Best Adapted Screenplay for translating Doris Kearns Goodwin's book on Lincoln to the screen (too bad SHE can't get the Oscar)
definate MUST SEE. it's the best acted movie I have seen in the last ten years and even better acted than Spielberg's 1993 classic Schindler's List.

Daniel Day Lewis is a world class actor. Love his work.
Did you ever see the John Adams mini series that HBO produced a couple of years back. That was also splendid.
YES!!! DID see that and it was also OUTSTANDING history AND acting.
checked out an Oscar critics "tout" site and it was interesting that they ranked Daniel Day Lewis for Best Actor and Tommy Lee Jones for Best Supporting Actor as #1 pics but NOT Sally Fields. she wasn't even listed in the top 5 for Best Actress. "Sally Fields, Sally Fields" is ALL I have been hearing on entertainment TV shows
Lincoln was listed as #1 for Best Picture as was Spielberg for Best Director.
and speaking of HBO produced movies, their 1995 The Tuskegee Airmen was a MUCH better acted and more historically correct account of the 332nd Fighter Group from their training thru their battles than the recent 2012 movie Red Tails

speaking of "Steven Spielberg classics based on history with a GREAT story and GREAT acting", his 1997 movie Amistad plays onTurner Classic Movies Sunday Dec 30th @ 7 pm pacific time
stars Anthony Hopkins as John Quincy Adams, Nigel Hawthorne as Martin Van Buren, Matthew McConaughey as the African's lawyer Baldwin, Morgan Freeman as the black abolitionist Theodore Joadson and Djimon Hounsou as Cinque the leader of the slaves. also in lesser rolls are the late Pete Postlethwaite as district attorney William Holabird and Chiwetel Ejiofor as James Covey a black Royal Navy sailor who serves as Baldwin's african Mende language interpreter.
along with Schindler's List and now Lincoln, it is one ofSpielberg's BEST EVER historic dramas

Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens definately had some of the best (and most caustic) lines in the movie...
Thaddeus Stevens (in response to Ohio Representative George Pendleton leader of the "Copperheads" played by Peter McRobbie) - "How can I hold that all men are created equal when here before me stands stinking the moral carcass of the gentleman from Ohio? Proof that some men are inferior. Endowed by their maker with dim wits, impermeable to reason, with cold pallid slime in their veins instead of hot red blood. You are more reptile than man George, so low and flat that the foot of man is incapable of crushing you."
Thaddeus Stevens (to New York Congressman Fernando Wood played by Lee Pace) - "Would Mr. Wood conclude his interminable gabble? Some of us breathe oxygen and we find the mephitic fumes of his oratory a lethal challenge to our pulmonary capabilities."
Thaddeus Stevens - "The greatest measure of the 19th century was passed by corruption, aided and abetted by the purest man in America.
it also looks like, from seeing the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards listings, that Sally Fields, probably because her part as Mary Todd Lincoln is NOT that BIG in the movie, will probably be nominated as "Best Actress in a SUPPORTING Role" for an Oscar

Rat, This movie might be hard for T. Jones to get his due. "The Academy" won't regard a player who is playing a hard line part that is true to our history. They'll box out and not reward him. I don't think a player who is playing true to that time will get garbage for awards. Doubt T. Jones cares that much. He'll be okay.
I'm a big fan of S.Fields but have some probs with her. She was OK but maybe miscast. I guess Kathy Bates is to old but I wonder if a actress like her would nail that role.
Love the way the movie was shot in low light. The insides of rooms were dim back then. Just some gas lights. I liked that play on reality. The costumes were good.

I agree. the cinematography was excellent. somewhat reminded me of "Deutsch Schule" early movies like "M", "Nosferatu", "Metropolis" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" that used the light level to set the mood for a scene.
IF Tommy Lee Jones does NOT get that Best Supporting Actor Oscar, it will be the biggest ROBBERY since Rod Steiger lost Best Actor for his portrayal of Sol Nazerman in "The Pawnbroker" to Lee Marvin "and a horse" in 1965.

check out these two pictures of the REAL Thaddeus Stevens and Tommy Lee Jones portraying him in "Lincoln". IT'S AMAZING. I wonder IF they could be distantly related?
