Kill the Messenger (2014) Jeremy Renner, Mary Elizabeth Winstead
A reporter becomes the target of a vicious smear campaign that drives him to the point of suicide after he exposes the CIA's role in arming Contra rebels in Nicaragua and importing cocaine.
2/4 dogbones
It was a heck of a story back in the day. Although Renner was good I didn't think it was a heck of a movie.
Sometimes a movie is better off being a documentary.

Based on a true story about American chess prodigy Josh Waitzkin. This is one of the better movies that I've seen in a long time. It's been playing on HBO this month and stars Joe Montagna as Josh's father, Ben Kingsley as his chess teacher and Laurence Fishbourne as his "street coach."
I highly recommend this flick, even if you don't understand chess too well.
3.5 out of 4 for me.

Bicentennial Man (1999) SciFi "comedy" drama from the novel The Positronic Man written by Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg about a sentient robot played by Robin Williams trying to become more human like over this lifetime. think "Mr Data" in Star Trek. I found it an interesting but rather "plodding " story with some funny lines from Williams BUT it is NOT really a "comedy". good cast playing the robot Andrew's "family" it explores issues of humanity, slavery, prejudice, and intellectual freedom. best other characters in the movie besides Williams are Oliver Platt as robotics engineer Rupert Burns who works with Andrew to make him more humanlike and Kiersten Warren as "Galatea" Burn's perky female robot assistant.
I found it a rather slow but compelling drama worth a look IF you are into Isaac Asimov style SciFi and just enjoy good acting. the plot is mostly the interaction between Andrew and his family. plays again on HBO channels Thursday December 3rd, Saturday December 5th, Monday December 7th and Wednesday December 9th. rate it of four

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) fast paced action-spy film staring Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine. could be a 'breakout" roll for young English actor Taron Egerton as "Eggsy" the young Kingsman recruit. obviously somewhat a knockoff of a James Bond film with some of the comic elements of an Austin Powers.
very different roll from the usual serious dramatic for Colin Firth. will he start doing action now like Liam Neeson? I thought it was excellent but a little "cartoonish" in spots BUT was had oodles of fights and ordnance and a couple of intersting "plot twists" plays again on HBO-Z (HD) Saturday December @ 7:05pm, HBO2 East Monday December 7th @ 2:45pm, HBO East Wednesday December 9th @ 9:25pm and next day @ 12:25am on HBO West. rate it of four

Joe's Apartment (1996) watched again the other night. another really "stupid funny" comedy like Dude? Where's My Car? absolutely crazy plot about a young guy in a NYC rent controlled apartment the landlord is trying to force everyone out of. in that respect it has has elements of *** Batteries Not Included (1987) BUT instead of the little machine "fix-it" aliens helping Joe it is about 20K talking, singing dancing cockroaches who like living in his apartment with him just fine. really funny dialog and insane sight gags throughout. the villains trying to empty the building are cartoonisly funny as is Robert Vaughn (he must have been hurting for money) as the landlord. like all true "awfu" films it has a 19% Rotten Tomatoes and was panned by the critics. unlike Dude? Where's My Car? it also bombed at the box office. I, however, think it's pretty fast paced and really hilarious in spots. Ralph and Rodney Roach are typical New Yorkers who take NO crap from ANYONE. IF you liked Dude? Where's My Car? it is worth a look.
the only real "beef" I had with it IS they got TOO "arty-smarty" and over did it with the "Chipmunk" style Roach voices. with Ralph and Rodney much of their dialog is either barely understandable or unintelligible. could be the reason it was a "box office bomb". they would have been better off just using Gilbert Gottfried and Rodney Dangerfield in normal voice for Ralph and Rodney Roach. plays again on Encore Wed Dec 12th @ 3:30pm and Starz-Kids & Family Friday Dec 11th @ 9:55pm. I rate it of four it is SO "stupid funny"

Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) about 10 minutes into this soft core BDSM flick I hit fast forward and just let it run looking for "the suckin' and the fukkin" BUT really wasn't much. pretty damn tame for all the hype. it's on HBO channels all next week IF you want to fool with it. personally I thought it was an "arty-smarty" bore and complete that wasted 40 minutes of my life
Soldier (1998) SciFi "future war" action movie staring Kurt Russell as a discarded "raised from birth" future soldier helping space colonists in a fight for survival with a group of murderous "inhanced soldiers". features Connie Nielsen, Sean Pertwee (son of Doctor Who 3rd Doctor Jon Pertwee) and Gary Busey. Jason Isaacs a really nasty villain as the CO of the murderous "inhanced soldiers". a relatively short play time @ 90 minutes it has excellent fight scenes and pretty much non-stop action. played on Cinemax and hopefully will repeat soon. I think worth a look for action fans I rate it of four

Elizabeth (1998) loosely based on the early years of Queen Elizabeth I of England's reign, it is a "tour de force" for Cate Blanchett (Best Actress Oscar nomination) in the title role with an outstanding supporting cast of Geoffrey Rush, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Fiennes, Sir John Gielgud, Daniel Craig and Richard Attenborough. it plays on the HD Movies channel again Monday December 14th @ 4:00pm & 8:05pm followed by it's sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) also with Blanchett in the title role (and a second Oscar nomination) and Geoffrey Rush again as the queens advisor Walsingham along with Clive Owen as Sir Walter Raleigh. plays the same date @ 6:05pm & 10:15pm. BOTH excellent movies if you like early English historical dramas well worth recording. I rate them both of four
Bringing Out the Dead (1999) just happened to stumble over this little known Martin Scorsese directed drama with a pretty good cast staring Nicolas Cage and Patricia Arquette with John Goodman, Ving Rhames, Marc Anthony and Tom Sizemore. plot is about a burned out NYC paramedic (Cage) struggling to keep his sanity with all the crazy cases he handles every night. I found it interesting, fast paced and pretty well acted by all involved and had pretty funny "dark humor" situations. I think worth a look and also has a really good soundtrack. it plays again on Showtime-Extream Wednesday December 9th @ 10:15an & 5:00pm and Sunday December 13th @ 1:30pm. I rate it of four

In the future, a wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legalized.
1.5/4 dog bones. For about the first 30 minutes of this movie I was intrigued. Then it turned on a downward spiral. And the ending was more hilarious than scary.
So the best thing about this movie for me was it was about an hour and 20 minutes. I hear the sequel is a lot better.

Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956) drama based on the life of middleweight boxing legend Rocky Graziano stars Paul Newman as Rocky and Pier Angeli as his wife Norma with Everett Sloane as his manager Irving Cohen and Sal Mineo as a young street punk friend of Rocky's Romolo. early career. uncredited bit part for Steve McQueen as Fidel. one of the few early Paul Newman movies I had never seen before and he was excellent as was the rest of the cast ex for Angeli who has that mousy voice a number of the 1950's actresses "effected". definitely worth watching for boxing or Paul Newman fans it played on Turner Classic Movies and hopefully will repeat soon. The Time Machine (2002) slightly different telling of the H. G. Wells classic from the 1960 film version it stars Guy Pearce as the time traveler, Samantha Mumba as Mara a young Eloi woman and Omero Mumba as Kalen, Mara's young brother (he is her true life brother). features Orlando Jones as Vox 114 a holographic artificial intelligence librarian and Jeremy Irons as an "Uber Morlock" member of the telepathic ruling caste of the Morlock world. thought it started out somewhat slow with the "tragic romantic" back story in the beginning BUT picked up once the time traveler gets to the Eloi-Morlock future. runs a short 90 minutes and I found it intersting for the changes made to the basic plot and the excellent FX special effects. plays again on Cinemax channels Monday December 14th, Wednesday December 16th and Saturday December 19th. agree with doggs assessment of Run All Night (2015) last month after watching it. good crime-action drama staring Liam Neeson and Ed Harris with excellent action, chase scenes and ordnance BUT the Neeson and Harris characters really NOT that compelling. NO way near as good as Neeson's Taken three picture series BUT worth a look for action fans. been playing on HBO and I rate it of four
also agree with Slobbasaurus's assessment of St. Vincent (2014) "tour de force" for Bill Murray as crabby old Vietnam War vet Vincent MacKenna who takes his new young pre-teen neighbor Oliver played by Jaeden Lieberher under his wing and teaches him "the ways of the world" much to the chagrin of his mother played by Melissa McCarthy. Naomi Watts good as Vincent's pregnant proztitute love interest Daka BUT after Murray youngLieberher pretty much steals the show. lot of "dark comedy" in this one and I found it entertaining. been playing on Showtime channels and I rate it of four
The Black Dahlia (2006) "neo noir" crime-mystery drama staring Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson, Aaron Eckhart and Hilary Swank based on a true life 1947 LA murder. a little slow BUT pretty good plot with some interesting "twists". has a lot of elements of the 1997 crime film LA Confidential. worth watching iF you like a good mystery. been playing on Cinemax channels and I rate it of four
Killer Elite (2011) good action-thriller staring Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro based on the supposedly true novel The Feather Men about the repercussions of the British SAS involvement in the Oman civil war. typical Statham lots of fights, chase scenes and "oodles of ordnance. played recently on IFC so IF you want to see you should record because that channel is over-run with commercials. definite of four for Statham and De Niro fans
The Hybrid aka Scintilla (2014) low budget SciFi straight to DVD action mystery about former Soviet research scientists experimenting with splicing alien DNA to humans. short 90 minute movie with pretty good action, "startle scenes" and a rather bizzar ending. has a pretty much unknown cast. worth a watch IF into this type SciFi. played recently on Showtime channels. The Last Detail (1973) played on Sony channel last night and I can never pass it up. repeats Saturday December 26th @ 8:35 am pacific. stars Jack Nicholson as SM1 Billy "Badazz" Buddusky, Otis Young as GM1 Richard "Mule" Mulhall and Randy Quaid (in his first major film roll) as Seaman Meadows. in my opinion one of Nicholson's best ever (was nominated for Best Actor Oscar) and a first picture "tour de force" by Quaid (was nominated for Best Supporting Actor Oscar) along with small but interesting parts by Clifton James as the Norfolk Chief MAA, Michael Moriarty in an early career roll as the 1st Lt Marine Brig Duty Officer and future SNL star Gilda Radner as a Buddhist Temple member.
one reason I really like the Sony presentation is they do NOT "edit for content" so you get all the "salty language" of the theater original. Nicholson received a number of lesser Best Actor awards but was very disappointed he didn't win the Oscar and in my opinion the ONLY reason Quaid didn't win was it was his first major roll ever. as a big Nicholson fan and former U S Navy I obviously rate it of four. it is a definite "must view" for any Nicholson fan
DC bar scene probably THE most famous in the movie although the later "I Would Like To Drink a Toast To Batman, Superman and The Human Torch" scene probably THE most quoted esp by former Navy folks >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt1kK8gsag4

The Martian - One of the best movies I've seen all year. A little on the long side, and the parallels with Gravity and Interstellar are a little unavoidable (quite frankly, it also started to remind me of The Core (which is like the worst movie ever) near the end, but it's a fun ride nevertheless. Highly recommended.
The Hateful Eight - I love Quentin Tarantino (well, other than Jackie Brown), but there was just no point to this movie. It's like a stage play being acted out on the big screen, but the characters are pretty blah, the dialogue is just ok, and at the end of it all it's just like "So?" I guess when you reach certain heights with his past films, it's hard not to disappoint when he stumbles a bit, but this was a pretty poor effort as far as I'm concerned.

Waited for the crowds to thin out, and enjoyed Spectre.
As you can no doubt tell, I'm a Bond fan.
Daniel Craig is brilliant, as usual, and the "bad guys" are top notch.
I liked the way they linked back to previous movies, and look! Bond slept with a woman over 40!
There are action sequences, and there are action sequences.
From SFGate-"The movie’s first sequence puts the audience on notice that Bond is back. In a continuous shot, Bond meets a woman at the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico City, where everyone is wearing grotesque masks. She invites him up to her room, where she lies on the bed, and he excuses himself for just a minute. He steps out of her window, walks briskly across a ledge — it really does look as if Craig is up there — and arrives at the corner of a rooftop just in time to assassinate three people and blow up a building.
He’s just getting started. I haven’t even mentioned the escape from a collapsing building or the fight he has on a helicopter, trying to kill the pilot without causing a crash. In the course of a year, there are hundreds of movies and countless action sequences. Each one makes it harder to raise an audience’s pulse. But within five minutes, “Spectre” has everyone sitting with their eyes wide and their mouths half open."

have heard that Spectre is THE best Bond movie EVER. will have to go some to beat the original Dr. No (1962) & Goldfinger (1964) with Sean Connery and my personal favorite Live and Let Die (1973) with Roger Moore and Clifton James as Sheriff J.W. Pepper. also tough to beat Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) with Pierce Brosnan and Jonathan Pryce as evil media mogul Elliot Carver who just may be the best Bond villain ever along with GoldenEye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999) with maybe the two best Bond chase scenes ever also both with Brosnan
I must say though that I don't think Daniel Craig has made a bad Bond movie yet and he is a "throwback" to the original "deadly serious" Sean Connery James Bond the way he portrays the roll. Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008) and Skyfall (2012) all excellent so would NOT be surprised IF Spectre (2015) IS the best ever

The Paper (1994) pretty funny "dark comedy" about a NYC newspaper newsroom. stars Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Randy Quaid, Robert Duvall and Jason Alexander with a cameo by Jason Robards as the papers owner. runs just short of two hour and I laughed the whole way thru. has an 88% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. played on The Movie Channel and hopefully will repeat soon. I rate it of four
