Forrest Gump
(One out of Five Stars)
This is, in my opinion, the most overrated film in recent history. Pretentious, “feel good”, and manipulative in its attempts to counterfeit drama, the performances are weak and the plot is just silly. It is a surface film that somehow captured an astoundingly large audience. Sure, we get the derivative message that even if life hands you diversity, you must overcome it by biting in anyway. This subtext is not “sub” at all as it is preached throughout the entire film and is as original as it is profound (not at all). We have seen it all before, and although life may be like a box of chocolates, this film is like a box of stale, unsalted, popcorn. To think, this movie won Best Picture over Pulp Fiction? It would be unbelievable to me if I thought that Academy Awards were truly based on fine filmmaking. Tom Hanks was pretty good when he was doing comedy, but, stupid is as stupid does… right?
