Five out of Five Stars
It is often said that actors give performances that are “inspired” or “phenomenal”. Sean Penn, as the great freedom fighter Harvey Milk, is much more than that in this film. He is absolutely possessed by his character. I became aware of the tragic, yet inspiring story of Harvey Milk when I was quite young as I sought to understand the lyrics to a song by my favorite band at the time: The Dead Kennedys. The song was a cover/reinterpretation of The Clash Classic “I Fought the Law” and hunted to bring attention to the amazing life of Mr. Milk. Since then I have read countless works about the champion and even written a paper celebrating his miraculous life. Gus Van Sant does a phenomenal job (as usual) and brings a work to the screen that inspires all with a heart. This film is as good as it gets when it comes to tributes and, as sad as it may be, it brings warmth to my heart to see an important story be told with such integrity. When I think of the quote by Harvey Milk: “If a bullet should go through my head let that bullet go through every closet door!” it makes me realize that he wasn’t just speaking to the homosexual community but to everyone who has ever felt persecuted against. What can I say…? I am a sucker for the truth. Open the closet doors wide! This is an inspired and inspiring film. BRILLIANT!
