The problem with most of the films that attempt to capture teenage indifference and angst is that they approach the subject with pretentiousness and obvious stereotypes which are distantly removed from reality. Gus Van Sant takes a slightly different approach. He has decided, with Paranoid Park, to approach his angst ridden and indifferent teenage subjects with subjective angst and indifference. This is not to say that the film doesn’t care…. In many ways it cares more than most by subscribing to a commitment of authenticity and realism that is not only brave, but beautiful. Paranoid Park delivers on its promises and tells the story it sets out to tell. As simple as that sounds, it is a rarity in film and is, therefore, yet another fine achievement from one of the profound filmmakers of our time and space.
