I read the other thread for this film and everyone there makes some valid points. Clearly Mark Wahlberg should not have been cast in this role. I can't totally say this film sucked. As in all of his films he has haunting scenes that will make your jaw drop. Refer back to Signs when there was the footage of the Alien being caught on Video. In the The Happening the scenes with the Construction workers all jumping off of the building leaves you saying "Oh my God". That has always been M. Night's goal.
What a lot of people have missed is the social comentary in this film. With out giving it away there is a clear statement with regards to how we as humans are treating our environment. Let's also not forget the whole "Culture of Fear". If something like that happened for real some of those scenes are quite acurate. Refer to the "Get off of my property scene". If something like that happened is it really everyone for themselves? I'm not sure but he sure paints a picture that it is.

ok, as a movie fanatic, i completley respect any individual opinion of a film. if you like a movie, then that is your choice, and nothing anybody says can change the fact that you enjoyed it. however, i respectfully disagree, to the extent that i dont even see how anybody could have enjoyed it. everybody knows that m night was preaching a message about the way we treat our environment. but to have plants getting back at humans?? come on, he can do better than that.

Fair enough.. the point I was making with the "if something like that happened for real" was refering to the whole "Culture of Fear", do we really half to fear our neighbours, why don't we help each other in a time of need. You know the scene I'm referring to. As well the "attack" was taking place in the North East U.S. yet there are scenes of people in area's not affected who were huddled in bathtubs, arming themselves etc, I believe that to be quite accurate if mass hysteria happened (what ever the cause of the mass hysteria is),
As I side note I'm not saying this film was excellent or 5stars I gave it a marginal 3/5 which means it's worth checking out as a matinee.
Also YoungOne as I'm a film buff myself I'm curious to get your opinion on what he could have done differently here which might have made the film better recieved.
And off track I'm checking out this Heavy Metal Documentary called Global Metal tomorrow, supposed to be really good. It's taking a look at the culture of Heavy Metal in countries outside of North America. It's featuring Metallica, Sepultura, Slayer, + some other metal bands from other countries like India and Japan.I don't think it's going to get wide release but it might be worth seeing......I'm in Toronto so I have the benefit of seeing a lot of films in theatres that don't get Wide Release

I didnt' hate this film like many did, but I wonder to what sham's intentions were on many aspects of it...
First of all, I like the movie, but I can see why people will hate it.
I like the mood that Shyamalan sets in his films. I think James Newton Howard's musical scores are excellent and help set the tone.
I dislike the fact that Shyamalan feels the need to explain things. It dumbs the movie down and makes it sound ridiculous - i.e. plants releasing toxins.
That being said, he sort of acknowledges the absurdity of it all with Mark Wahlberg speaking to plastic plants.
But, even the 'cause' of the Happening really isn't a definite cause. Shyamalan explains it in the first scene with Wahlberg and the bees - we as scientists can't really explain why some things happen.
For example, CO2 emissions probably contribute to global warming. But are scientists 100% certain? Absolutely not. The scientific method, like Wahlberg quickly does when they are running from the wind, is merely an educated guess.
So, i see the film as making a statement about not so much 'Plants are crazy - we need to make them happy', but more about Science can't explain everything and how some explainations (scientific or not) will put us into a state of fear.
The three people who stick together are the ones that live, despite marital problems, crazy plants, etc.
Now, do I think Shyamalan could have made a better film? Yes, but it's still a decent effort.

This film got a 13% rating from the top critics on Rotten Tomatoes. I think I'll wait to download this to see how bad it really is if I can sit through it.
