two classics on Turner Classic Movies Tuesday November 13th
Ship of Fools (1965) @ 9:15 am eastern. VERY well acted drama which tells the overlapping stories of several passengers aboard a German ocean liner bound to Germany from Mexico in 1933. stars Vivien Leigh, Simone Signoret, Jose Ferrer, Lee Marvin, Oskar Werner, Michael Dunn, Elizabeth Ashley, George Segal, Jose Greco and Heinz Ruhmann.
Ruhmann as the Jewish businessman Julius Lowenthal and Dunn as the dwarf "playboy" Carl Glocken are really outstanding in their rolls as are Marvin as the boorish baseball player Bill Denny and Ferrer as the Nazi propagandist Siegfried Rieber. some GREAT quotable lines throughout the movie esp Lowenthal's " Listen, there are nearly a million person in Germany. what are they going to do? Kill all of us?" at the end of a monolog about German person being more German than person where he alludes to his and other German person military service in WWI.
The Caine Mutiny (1954) @ 2:45 pm eastern. stars Humphrey Bogart, Jose Ferrer, Van Johnson, E. G. Marshall, Robert Francis and Fred MacMurray. worth recording just for the scene where Bogart as Captain Queeg comes unstuck on the witness stand during the court-martial. received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Bogart as best Actor. one of "Bogie's" MANY great performances in his career from gangster Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest (1936) which made him a star to boxing writer Eddie Willis in his last movie The Harder They Fall (1956)

Rat, Very good to point out "Ship of Fools" Thanks, I only saw it once and was a punk ass teenager. I remember Lee Marvin as a minor character complaining he couldn't hit a curve ball. I'll give it another try but a lot of those 1960's films are all about throwing a lot of big stars in a mix and coming up with a boring movie. Curious to revisit.
"Caine Mutiny" won't be watched because I know it to well. Marvelous movie and Bogart was the only actor worth watching. He dominated. I think this could rate 3rd best role but up for discussion.
I like" Maltese Falcon" and "Sierra Madre" best in a tie and "Casablanca" 3rd with "Mutiny" 4th. Shit, how did that guy get such great roles?

yes, also one of the great lines in the movie where Bill Denny is crying to Carl Glocken about not making it to the MLB because he couldn't hit an outside curve ball and Glocken saying "You know, there must be millions of people worldwide that have no idea what an outside curve ball is"
also Siegfried Rieber rooming with Julius Lowenthal and complaining to him that all Germany's problems are because of the person. Lowenthal comes back that "Yes, it's all the person and the Bicycle Riders" to which Rieber comes back with "Why the Bicycle Riders?" to which Lowenthal replys "Why the person?"

I remember such little parts of that movie but after you mention it, wasn't the curve ball scene where he was talking to a woman after he had offended her and did a apology with the door half open but not closed. They did wake together the next day? The brute got the virgin type thing. Maybe I'm thinking another movie.
