Whats up guys. I know sports like the back of my hand. I know movies even better. I know what is going to be big, what is going to be good, what is going to suck, and what is going to win oscars months before most people even know these projects exist. It's just a hobby of mine. Here are a few films to look for until the end of this year. See these. They are either good for sure or I think that they have a very good chance of being good. I have a lot of friends who see a lot of advanced screenings, so I do know what I am talking about.
First, let me mention some movies that may be playing at arthouse theaters in cities near you. If you have any chance, check these out:
Let the Right One in- This is a Sweedish vampire movie that many people are calling the best vampire movie of all time. It is the story of a 12 year old boy who learns that his new neighbor is a vampire, and that is all I will give away. This hasn't been out for two months and they are already planning an American remake. Don't wait for that sure to be shitshow. See this original as soon as you can.
Gardens of the Night- This is a touching story about a girl who was abducted and abused as a child, her relationships, her struggles to find a place in life, and her realization that her parents may still be alive. Here is the shocker of the year: The performance of a lifetime (as the abductor) is given by Tom Arnold. No joke!!! Yes, that Tom Arnold.
Now, the rest will be films that will be coming out between now and the end of December:
Austrailia- This is a reteaming of Baz Luhrmann and Nicole Kidman, but don't expect it to be as much of a chick flick as Moulan Rouge. I don't know much about the plot of this one, but I know it is a passion project for Luhrmann and that early buzz has been great.
Milk- Another one that has had incredible buzz. Sean Penn as Harvey Milk will certainly be oscar fodder. Not sure if it is my personal taste, but should be well made and well acted.
Frost/Nixon: A film about the interviews with Richard Nixon after Watergate directed by Ron Howard. Frank Langella is unreal.
Doubt: How about this. A film starring 3 of the best actors/actresses out there, with a great premise that will appeal to a big audience. However, it is directed buy a guy whos only other direction credit is Joe vs the Volcano!!!! Ill put my money on Phillip Seymore Hoffman, Meryll Streep, and Amy Adams. Should be a dandy.
The Wrester: After Tom Arnold, this film gives us the second most surprising unbelievable performance of the year. Mickey Rourke is absolutely mesmorizing as the title character. The film is directed by Darren Aaronofsky, who did Requiem for a Dream and Pi (and The Fountain, but I'll let him slide for that one). The plot will divide audiences as to whether it is too slow or just a great character study, but nobody can deny that Rourke will be an Oscar contender.
Gran Torino- Eastwoods second film of the year, after Changeling. But the big buzz here is Eastwood's acting in the movie, which could get him his first Oscar nom for acting. Film as a simple listed premise, but Eastwood has been great in the previous years so I trust him.
As I hear about more, I will post. Tell me what you think. You can use imdb.com to find more about these films and to see trailers. I hope you all enjoy this movie season, it should be a good one.
