Yes, they are different formats. How did you have your mini disc player hooked up? Do you have your cable/directv/etc. hooked up to a stereo receiver? If so, I can think of 3 ways it may work. You may be able to pull the audio link (digital coax, toslink, or just the RCA's) from the back of your receiver, leaving the other end connected to your set top box (again, the cable box or Directv box), & plug it in to your CD/mini-disc recorder. Or if your receiver has pre-outs you could plug your recording unit into those & leave everything else as it & see if that works. Or, if you're using a digital coax/toslink & the RCA's (the red & white.....on the cable box) are unused, you could try plugging into those & see if you get anything. Hard to know what kind of level you're gonna get out of it but you can try it & see how it sounds.
Ultimately, it would be best to be able to get it recorded to a hdd so you could edit it if need be but this may suit you just fine if it works.
