Won tickets from the local radio station for the late Friday (9 PM) show at the Blue Note Honolulu club. Previous to this I only knew her for "One of Us" and a duet with Jackson Browne covering the Byrds' "My Back Pages". I'll admit that if it wasn't for my favorite price (free), I would not have given it a thought. What an IMPRESSIVE ARTIST! She sang, played guitar on some songs accompanied by a pianist who provided backup vocals and was very talented in his own right.
She did a song that I did not recognize immediately. One third of the way through, I realized it was The Rolling Stones' "Hip Shake" off of Exile. Good job! She proceeded into a haunting version of the Classic IV's "Spooky". Totally mesmerized by her rendition. Sang a couple of Dylan songs, "Buckets of Rain" and "Tangled Up in Blue" which reminded me of the genius of Dylan's story telling delivered by a much sweeter voice. Then a gem she recently wrote for Mavis Staples whom she had just toured with. I believe the song was "Freedom" but I'm not really sure if that's the title. She mentioned she hoped Mavis covers the song that has yet to be recorded so we were treated to something that is brand new. It's an "anthem song" with excellent potential and seems like a good fit for an icon like Mavis Staples. I will be looking for the finish version! A thoroughly, excellent, intimate 80 minute show by a true artist. Rock, pop and blues with a lot of soul!
