Okay we have all been around the term for years now. Indie rock has yet to be drfined to my taste. It seems a bit whiny of music, but mostly that is because it uses the "rock" genre in it's terminology.
So here is my opinion. I think the genre is named wrongly for a few reasons. "Rock" has a certain connotation. It means it rocks!! It means anti-establishment. It means serious attitude. It means your parents, or at least your grandparents would hate it. It means many things. Rock has a meaning, and it has been that way now for over 70 years.
The problem is that "Indie Rock" is none of these. The only thing that they have in common with traditional rock bands, is that they tend to use the same instuments. They have electric guitars, a bass and a drum kit. That is the only real relevance that I can see that makes this music in any way similar to "ROCK"
I don't think that common instruments is enough of a correlation to call it rock. You can play classical music or theatrics music on these instruments, and it has been done many times.
I have no real beef with this genre as a whole. If people like it, great. I like a few of those that would describe themselves as Indie Rock. Most do it to seem current and appeal to the hipsters... my opinion.
I just don't think this genre "tows the load" so to speak, of being worthy or accurate of being classified as ROCK
