It’s jimmie johnson vs. the world, and by the early look of things that’s not about to change anytime soon. Already Johnson has won a race – Thursday’s Duel 150. He did it in typical Team 48 fashion, by outhinking the competition The win served as yet another reminder that even if they aren’t as fast as you, they’re still smarter.
Is it finally Tony Stewart’s day?
Despite leading laps in the last six Daytona 500s and twice leading the most laps, Tony Stewart has never won NASCAR’s biggest race. With two championships to his name and a pair of Brickyard 400 wins, it is unquestionably the one thing missing from his Cup racing résumé.
What will Dale Jr. do?
Earnhardt is supposed to be better at Daytona than anywhere else, so it would figure that a poor finish Sunday would mean a missed opportunity. He can’t afford many of those, not even this early in the season. A year ago, seven of the top 12 drivers after five races wound up making the Chase.
There are a lot of people expecting – hoping – he will, the question is, will he?
In an effort to ensure races end under green-flag conditions, NASCAR has altered its Green-White-Checkered finish rule to include multiple attempts. In the past, they would make one attempt at a GWC finish. If a caution came out, that was it and the race ended under a yellow flag.
Now, however, NASCAR will make up to three attempts at a GWC finish. If a caution comes out before the leader has taken the White Flag, signaling one lap to go, NASCAR will line them up and do it again – three times if that’s what it takes.
