I'm a HUGE Michael Jordan guy and have been following nba since the mid 80s and a lot of people say Jordan/Pippen but Kobe/Shaq was about as good as you could possibly get. The perfect mix of in and out. People say the league has changed and centers aren't as important but if anyone had a Shaq in todays game theyd be a center driven offense.
I think people forget how truly overpowering and dominate Shaq was. MJ is the greatest player ever to me but no one Ive ever seen has DOMINATED and controlled the game the way Shaq did for a 5-7 year stretch, there was literally no one who could even slightly hang with him when he was into the game. If he would have been a 65% free throw shooter I think he'd be recognized as possibly a top 10 player ever, which he rarely ever is now.
Kobe in his prime was basically MJ, at about 98%.
The other thing about these two is regardless of how bad they hated each other they both knew they could count on each other to bring all they had in the game. Kobe doubted Shaq's offseason dedication but never once questioned Shaq's desire and will to win in season and in game. These two were truly a special combo

have to agree with you....an incredible, dominant, dynamic duo that crushed all before them...was a shame that they had to split the way they did.......shaq was an unstoppable force that needed AT LEAST 2 guys on or around him at all times and cud rebound and block shots at a high rate when motivated, then kobe was a brilliant, athletic scorer that cud shoot well from all parts of the court and cud close games for you when shaq wasnt capable cos he cudnt get it done from the charity stripe.
i LOOOVE pippen/jordan too and it takes sum consideration but as a pair you gotta give the nod to the lakers cos kobe in his prime cud sort of hang with jordan,or at least close to....but shaqs impact compared to pippen's isnt really comparable...again,i looove pippen, hes one of my favourite dudes, but shaq just brought a whole new dimension that cud not be replicated or slowed in any way.

Physical specimens who never worked on their games don't impress me that much, which is why I never liked Shaq. I don't mind guys who are physically gifted, whether they be tall, fast, or strong, but work on your game.
Kobe and Shaq may have been a great duo, but anyone as big, strong and athletic as Shaq would have dominated. All the guy ever did was displace smaller players and dunk over them. More like football than basketball. I would have loved to see Sabonis (a skilled big man) in his prime school Shaq the way Olajuwon did in the finals against Orlando.

you are correct in your assertion that shaq never had much finesse, nuance or advanced skill to his game, beginner boy...it was always my contention that if he were only 6'6" with his skill-set that he wud not even standout in a local rec. league competiotion...but obviously you cant take away sumones physical attributes, that is wat makes these guys the freaks they are-the fact that decent skills(or incredible skills in many cases) are packed into these amazing frames/bodies.
BUT regardless,he was wat he was and it says sumthing about the truly unique combination of height, girth, mobility, strength, dexterity that he had that he cud have such a relatively "limited" game and still be the most dominant big to ever play the game.
i give him a pass for getting owned by olajuwan...i think he was only in his third year or sumthin??...wasnt quite seasoned enuff.
