If an NFL team pulled something like that, even a bad team, we would be talking about it for years. But in the NBA, it's just par for the course. And to think, buying points in the NBA is more expensive than football.
Why, when points are absolutely meaningless. The other day, the Nuggets were -800 on the ML against the Suns and they almost lost. Meanwhile, the Pats playing the Browns closed at -400, and the Pats were never even threatened. The odds in the NBA are a complete joke because of one reason, and one reason only: It is a player's league!! Remember that. These guys have fully guaranteed contracts and they answer to nobody but themselves. In the NFL, if a player misses on a couple of assignments or plays, he is shipped out the next day. In the NBA, they blame the coach. It's an f'n joke!
Look at the Pelicans last night. For three games, against better competition, they play their little hearts out, only to come up short. Now at 0-3 and playing in a winnable game at home, they pull a no-show. An absolute wire-to-wire no show. But that's OK, they all gettin paid, and there are 78 more games left for them to prove just how inept they are.
All this to say, psychological angles only pay off when predicting the mental state of those who have relatively "normal" psychic dispositions. In other words, those who care about their jobs or their job performance and/or must answer to a higher authority if they fail to perform. None this applies to the modern NBA player, unless it is self-imposed, i.e., guys taking pride in their work and getting the job done because it is part of their value system or ethos.
Until further notice, no NBA for me, though I do love the Kings tomorrow night:) It's a good spot for them, and they should capitalize. But will they?
