Some of us gamblers like to blame the refs after a bad beat and it's only natural; why blame ourselves for betting on the wrong team when the ref is such an easy scapegoat. Still, there are times when refs make mistakes and even times when their "mistakes" are too suspicious to simply be called mistakes and/or bad officiating. This year I lost a big bet when the Warriors first played the Spurs (or the Spurs' bench to be more exact). I'll be the first one to admit that the dubs played a terrible game (for the 1st 3 quarters) but when they finally did show up (in the 4th) the officials, or one official to be more exact (Rodney Mott), did everything in his power to insure the Warriors would not win and/or cover that game. Mott called 4 fouls on the Dubs within the first 3 or 4 minutes of the 4th, essentially guaranteeing free throws for the Spurs the rest of the game an also forcing the dubs to be a lot less aggressive on defense. And this is to say nothing of all the offensive foul calls called against the Dubs in the 4th. It's important to note that most of the public as well as covers (and many of the sharps, though not all) were on the dubs that night. After that game my friend, who was watching with me, told me to make sure never to bet on a game being officiated by Mott. Unfortunately, as gamblers, we have short memories.
Fast forward now to last night's Pistons/Bucks game. After the game I noticed that some people on this forum made comments about the number of fouls being called against the Pistons. That made me curious. When I looked at the box score two things jumped out at me:
1) The Pistons had 62 points in the paint and the Bucks had 56 and yet the Bucks got 36 free throws (on the road) and the Pistons 21. Also, Sessions who averages 3-4 free throws a game had 11 and Brandon Knight who also averages 3-4 free throws got 14 attempts (it was as if these guys turned into James Harden and Kevin Durant for one night in the eyes of the refs). How is this possible?
2) The second thing I noticed was that our friend, Rodney Mott, was one of the officials for this game. Now, to be fair, I did not see the game and have no idea which official called a majority of the calls against the Pistons, but if I had to guess my guess would be Mott as I witnessed his handy-work first hand when the Dubs played the Spurs. Of course, once again, this was a game where most of the public was on the Pistons.
And if you don't believe that there was anything shady about how this game was called how do you explain the free throw disparity in a game where both teams were being equally aggressive (62 and 56 points in the paint respectively) and where two guys got 3 times the number of free throw attempts that they normally avg?

Mott's record for a home fave of 5-9.5pts is
11-7 for the chalk but it is possible he plays sides. There are some amazing folks with heavy outliers that exist in this league -- Scott Foster also still in business after his career hanging with Donaghy. I'll dig and post a few all stars later today.

When you're making an argument, it's much better to have facts rather than GUESSES.

Agreed, but I was hoping somebody who saw the game would corroborate my guess. And even if Mott is exonerated how do you account for the free throw disparity and the number of attempts for two guys that only avg 3-4 a game?

Jesus... You people bet on a game between two teams that don't give a f*ck and you're crying about every single thing that happened.... It was a TERRIBLE game to bet on in the first place, and 95% of you on this site only bet it because the great attention lover Scal wrote up a huge write up about it, so you figured it must have been a great play... Guess what? It was still a write up about TWO TEAMS THAT DIDN"T GIVE A F*CK!!!!! I don't feel bad for anyone that lost on it who blindly tailed... If you did blindy tail Scal, shut the f*ck about it... It's not his fault. You made the bet. I really, really, don't care for Scal and have said so to him.... but he's not at fault here. He does what he does.... He's having a really good year doing it too. But don't cry when YOU lose and didn't do YOUR homework on something. And don't cry when you're playing the Pistons and Bucks in late March because that is just plain stupid.

This is not a discussion about Scal you numb nuts, it is about refereeing in the NBA! Now go sermonize somewhere else.

Its a discussion thats brought up way too many times and its one your never gonna win. No facts just accusations and really whats the point. If you feel MOTT is lining his pockets with your money then don't bet games hes officiating. Simple as that. This thread will end up like all the rest with ppl arguing like little kids. No offense but what does it prove; cause no one really has a clue if its true or not. Just saying.

Fine. I'm just putting this out there so people will be aware. That's two very fishy games the guy was involved in. We are building a case here, this is just the beginning.

OK go for it. Its your thread. GL dealing with the kids. Every nite theres games where something looks fishy. This is not big news. Trying to dissect it is not gonna result in a win or loss for anyone.

I know if covers was an Australian website and you were speaking of an Australian, he'd have every right to sue the shite out of you for defamation and he'd have an extremely strong case

Thanks, LT. That does help explain but I'll have to see for myself cause I just don't get how Detroit (who had more points in the paint) didn't draw as many fouls.
