How do you decide which games to play?

My plays were based on taking teams in the top 8 in their conference. Taking the better team in each match up. Mostly taking the top 4 in each conference vs lower & non seeded teams. The idea based on the fact elite teams do what they're supposed to be doing in this time if the season leading to the playoffs and that's beating teams they are supposed to be beating as these teams want to position themselves as best as possible for the playoffs. But I would lay off in games where say a 5th seed team would play a 6th or 7th seed team since they are often times too close.

But obviously there will be a time to adjust nearing the end of regular season when teams start locking up spots & teams out of the playoffs start playing the spoiler role and locked teams start playing dead & get their bench on the floor.
