I´ve been noticing recently that the teams which are out of playoff contention, are playing weak defense, especially when they face another team which is out of playoff contention.
I went and reviewed recent totals trends from last week and it appears my hypothesis is 100% supported by results (the sample is small):
Lakers-Knicks: 26 pts over.
Bulls Kings: hits exactly 231 (push)
Grizzlies-Wizards: 38 points over
Suns Pelicans: 39 pts over (30 of those from OT)
Mavs-Cavs: 20 points over.
Grizzlies-Hawks: 20 points over
Lakers-Bulls: 5 points over
Kings-Wizards: Went UNDER. However, this was a week ago, and I feel both teams were still in contention at that time.
Again, small sample size, but a trend to observe today for Mavs-Pelicans and Suns-Bulls.
