what are your recommendations for an online sports book? I’m located in California.

Your top 2 choices are Bookmaker and Bovada.  If you don't want to deal with Bitcoin, Bookmaker is the way to go.  I'll leave it to you to research the pros and cons of dealing with an offshore book.

Betanysports has great lines and tons of options but if you’re a beginner I’d start with bovada or mybookie

The reddit chatter on mybookie is very negative, seems to be a lot of complaints.

Bookmaker, Heritage, or Betonline. You won't have to worry about getting paid or dealing with location issues. I would suggest Heritage or Betonline, because they have a lot of options.
