Now I watched this again to see if there were any blown coverages or bad Defense by the Saints but the coverage was good, their was pressure in the pocket, and it was actually Alex Smith who made the plays with razor sharp passing. And most of all poise in the pocket with all the pressure on him to make the plays of the biggest game of his career.
He looked like Tom Brady on this last drive.
Watch it again here and you will see what Smith is capable of. He has proven himself on any doubts I may have had about him. Everyone likes to shit on him as a qb but he is actually pretty good. And making the big plays when it counts under pressure is a key measure of a good qb.

Watch the first several plays though and you will think you are watching a MAC team in a 2 min offense. They were very fortunate with the long play that opened it up - because they were standing at the line with the clock running looking confused.
That scared me - I had the 49ers ML - but honestly I think they were very forutnate.

I wont be convinced of Smith until he has a full season of sharp passes, but I too was shocked that he engineered two drives in the 4th quarter. I dont recall two drives the entire season that he was responsible for on his own merits.

You're only as good as you're next game.....but that throw to Davis to get em down ther was stone cold...and the run was Utah style.....I like the Niners kicking game on Sunday...it's the decider

Mr. inconsistent got lucky. The defense, special team, and the running game carried him the whole season.
inconsistent? I'm not sure he has only 5 int's all season. I think he has been made to play a conservative style all year to 49's type football approach. But when he has to make the pass plays it seems he can. I also watched him play well against a very good Steelers Defense this year. I have not watched him all year long but I can say the games I have seen him play he looked good.

i like what i saw the replay of Saints/Niners game again last night, Alex Smith hit two damm tight coverage passes to V. Davis, not even Montana or Young could guarantee that small windows under one minute to play and season is on the line.
Smith has been playing his best football as of now since he turned pro, at QB rating of 90.7.

I was generalizing..of course since the Cards are in the 49ers division I get to see plenty of Alex and I just dont have a high opinion of him and it will take more before I change that view.
He is like Eli..a game manager who can show some decent play but can also play like sh!t that if he were on a team where there was not balance (Flacco is another example) and a good defense, he would wilt like Kolb did this year in AZ.

Thats another thing, do you all realize all they needed was a field goal to tie the game. Well they where not at all content with that, they went for it and got it.

Yes I saw those 2 first pass plays to gore for a total of 18 yards.
I thought those were good decisions by Smith he took what the saints gave him, not his first option, but obviously there was coverage further downfield so instead of making a stupid play and forcing a pass that would get int and end the game, or throw an incompletion, he ket the chains moving. You have to remember they just needed a fg to tie so moving the chains downfield was very important not necessarily having to get a td.
That next pass play to the right incomplete was a good play did you notice it was just off the finger tips of the receiver?
The next play the big 47 yarder to Davis he hit him down the middle in stride was right on the money. Alot of qb's could have missed this throw.
