1) Denver Broncos

• Regular Season Grade: 90.9 (A-)
• RS + Playoff Grade: 88.5 (B+, 1st)

The Denver Broncos finished the regular season as the only defense this season to crack the A-grade range.

However, the Broncos didn’t come close to that level in their Wild Card round loss to the Buffalo Bills. Denver’s 68.6 (D-) grade was the team’s second-worst in any game this season, ahead of only their 41-10 blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 9.

Denver ended up ranking first in EPA [expected points added] per dropback and first in EPA per rush on defense, but struggled to stop either side of Buffalo’s offense. The Broncos averaged their second-worst EPA per rush (-0.11) and third-worst EPA per dropback (-0.47). All that led to their worst success rate in 18 games this season (46%).

The Broncos enjoyed a welcome surprise season in 2024 after missing the playoffs eight straight seasons. Now that the drought is over, Denver can look to build a Super Bowl contender behind Bo Nix and this elite unit.

With Jalen Hurts MIA and Saquon Barkley less explosive than usual, the Philadelphia Eagles still cruised to a Wild Card victory over the Green Bay Packers. Four turnovers helps, but this defense remains one of the more suffocating all-around units.

Sometimes, Week 18 results can lie, with teams posting disproportionately dominant or awful performances because of backups. The Sunday night showdown between the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings was not one of those cases, however.

Instead, Detroit surged up five spots in the final rendition of these rankings with one of the most impressive defensive performances of the season. The Lions ended with their fourth-highest grade of the season (86.3, B) despite rolling out an injury-depleted MASH unit that also lost their top remaining cornerback, Terrion Arnold, to a foot injury.

After finishing as a top-seven defense in each of the last three seasons, the Buffalo Bills finished 18th during the regular season. That’s not the biggest surprise given that this was largely billed as a rebuilding season for this unit.

However, the Bills were able to overwhelm the Broncos in the Wild Card round following an opening drive touchdown. Buffalo had a strong run defense all year (sixth in EPA per rush), and that came through with the team’s fourth-best EPA per rush (0.27).

However, the leaky pass defense that ranked 26th in EPA per dropback also played at a well above-average level. Buffalo averaged 0.18 defensive EPA per dropback vs. the Broncos, the team’s sixth-best showing of the season.

The Bills’ offense is operating at such a high level that the bar to clear for the defense is lower than it would be on nearly any other team. Buffalo has met that threshold against lesser competition but will be challenged this week against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens, as well as in a potential AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium.
