Anyone familiar with the rules? If a 2pt conversion is from the 2 yds line and extra point is from the 15. Would it not make sense to go for 2 take a penalty and kick the extra point from the 7 yds line?
I’m just curious if there is something I’m missing out on why Dan didn’t kick the extra point on the second 2pts try, could of he even been trying to just draw Dallas offside (which they did) 5 yds closer and then attempt the 2 pts (which they also did) or take the delay of game which would of put them at the 14 yds line kick the extra point which is still closer than taking the extra point at the 15.

Lions HC is ultra aggressive. Initially going for two is fine, but once he got pushed back to 7yards he should of taken the extra point to go to OT.
I am sure Lions analytics person was having a meltdown there. 7 yards out? Down 1? You kick that extra point, under no circumstances do you go for two there especially since Lions defense was doing a decent job containing Dallas.

That is exactly my thoughts, but could have he of just been trying to draw them offside which they did? He was never going to go for it, If not take the delay and kick the extra point from 12. Which I don’t understand cause an extra point after a TD is from the 15.

It’s pretty much a call that goes against stats and analytics.
Even Troy Aikman on the telecast was talking shit about the call in a nice way.
if the Lions HC believes in his defense as he should of since they were getting pressure on Dallas all night, you leave it up to them to get the stop in OT if the coin flip does not go your way.

No... if they had decided to kick the XP, they would have had to move back to the 15 yard line. Not sure if it actually moves back to the 20, due to the penalty... but to answer your question, teams cannot decide to go for 2, then intentionally take a false start or delay of game, and then get to kick from the 7 instead of the 15.

Ok so then that kind of proves my thinking that on the 2nd attempt he was never going to go for it he was just trying to draw Dallas offside and get those original penalty (illegal touch) yards back which he managed to do. He had no timeouts so at worst he would take the delay and kick an extra point from the 15 or 20.
If that was the case it would have been brilliantly done.

Again, no incentive to go to OT and risk injury to key players in what was a meaningless game (with regards to the Lions' playoff picture).
If Detroit was 12-4 this morning, would this still be a topic of conversation?
Seems Campbell is the only person who had his players in mind in that whole situation. How dumb would he look if (for example) Hutch gets hurt in OT but Dallas wins anyways? He would be crucified and more importantly, his players would question his reasoning. Not good to have that kind of internal fracture a couple of weeks away from the playoff opener.
Don't over think this. Rewind the sequence about 60 seconds earlier; Campbell was going for the 2pt convert the second that drive started from their own 25.

Campbell MO; he's a man's man and coaches that way. He plays to win but he's not going to put his team in harm's way after 60 minutes of hard work. Decision was already made on the snap of that final drive whether xp or 2pt. 2pt convert could have started at half and Campbell would still go for two.
