Been in this community and betting sports for a long time and gave a genuine question. Looking for your general thoughts, and maybe some stats to support this if available.
Just before PLAYOFF time in most major sports I find myself leaning heavily on teams playing meaningful games (needing wins to secure playoffs spots, home field, division, etc.) I wonder if I'm overvaluing the fact they the team "needs" wins.
To eliminate variables, and take into account Vegas adjusting lines for whatever value THEY put on meaningful games....let's ask this question
Let's take an NFL game with 2 teams that have an identical records & skill One Team needs to win to make the playoffs, the other was eliminated 2 weeks prior
Questions :
1. How much value (points) would you give the team needing the wins if all other factors were equal (Fantasy situation, I know). 2. In your opinion does the line appropriately value the "need to win"? Does Vegas put value on the side NOT needing the win knowing betters will overvalue the "need to win"?
