Hank Stram Superbowl Formula

I was curious about the results of Stram's formula for the upcoming game. I know that early on when Stram created the formula it was very successful in the 20th century but when the game became passing centric it spit out the wrong team and missed on several occasions. He was no longer here to tweak his system and knowing him, he would have done a good job bringing it up to speed. 

DISCLAIMER: I provide this for entertainment purposes only. Has it been successful in the 21st century? I HAVE NO IDEA!!! 

I used stats on covers, the nfl stats website, and an nfl database for the penalty yards. If you get different numbers, so be it. I COULD CARE LESS!!! I went over it a number of times for accuracy. This is what I came up with. 

I am not a snake oil salesman selling a side. I myself am on the Chiefs but not because of this formula even though I admire Stram's legacy and his work as a head coach and his analysis on the MNF games on the radio over the years. The guy was money in his handicapping. RIP 

Give 10 points to a team if they have won a Super Bowl in the last three seasons. Chiefs

Give 8.0 points to either team if their opponent is playing in their very first Super Bowl in franchise history. N/A

Give 8.0 points to the team that has given up the fewer amount of defensive rushes. Chiefs 

Give 7.0 points to the team with the best straight up win/loss record including playoffs. Tied

Give 7.0 points to the team with the most offensive rushes on the season. Eagles

Give 5.0 points to the team with the better defensive yards-per-carry average. Chiefs

Give 4.0 points to the team that has the best net kick-punt touchdown returns. N/A

Give 4.0 points to the team who performed better against the point spread in the regular season. Eagles

Give 4.0 points to the team that has the better net penalty yards number. Eagles

Give 3.5 points to the team that has the greater yards per pass attempt. Tied 8.1

Give 3.5 points to the team that has allowed up the fewest points on the season. Eagles

Give 3.5 points to the team that has given up the fewest amount of rushing touchdowns. Chiefs

Give 3.0 points to the team that has recorded the most sacks. Eagles

Give 2.5 points to the team with the fewer offensive pass attempts. Eagles

Give 2.0 points to the team that had the best net punts (total) on the year. Chiefs

Give 1.5 points to the team with the best offensive yards-per-carry average. Chiefs

Give 1.0 points to the team with the better completion percentage. Chiefs

Chiefs - 31

It's a different era today then back when Hank developed this formula. There was no free agency back then, players rarely ever moved to different teams so therefore the one stat that gives the most points to any team, 10 pts is irrelavant today. A team that won a SB in the past 3 years, back then teams rarely changed, today 3 years later the team can be far cry from the same team/players from that SB win 3 years ago.

To give you an example since 2000 these teams won a SB in past 3 years are 2-9 ATS, so you are giving the most pts to a stat produces losers at a high rate in today's NFL

It's the same thing for the 2cd highest point total 8 pts to team playing a team in first SB in franchise history, another losing stat in today's NFL.

Think about this, in 2008 Steelers VS Zona, Steelers just won SB 3 years earlier and Zona was in first SB  so that is a whopping 18 pts to the Steelers and they were very lucky to win the game and did not WIN ATS, produced a loser ATS.

Do you know why ? Free agency, Zona picked up Curt Warner who back when Hank developed this Warner would not have changed teams.
