Hypothetical question about history, matchups and the 1972 Miami Dolphins.....

There is a thread about wether or not the 1972 Dolphins are the best team ever in the NFL. If it takes you more than 1 second to say "not even close", you dont know anything about football.

I stated in that thread that I really dont think Miami would have beat any team in the NFL from 1984 to todays date. Even assuming they would win a couple of those games, that still makes me put them in the bottom 25% or 15% of teams to play.

The NFL has been in existance for 44 years. Thats well over 1000 teams that have played. Can anyone tell me that they seriously believe the Dolphins would win vs even 25% of those teams?

You think Bob Griese could throw against the coverages and blitzing of todays game? Not to mention that the defense has 280lb 6' 6" guys that run a 4.4 sec 40 vs 240 lb offensive linemen....

You think Larry Csonka is gonna ever get out of the backfield? EVER?

You think Nick Bounicoti at linebacker is gonna tackle Reggie Bush or guard Dallas Clark?

Saw where someone put up this hypothetical line:

1972 Dolphins +28

2009 Raiders -28

I would take the Raiders and not think twice..what would the line be for the 1993 Cowboys or 1999 Rams????...I think that puts it in perspective. At least for me....

How about if those 1972 players had all the resources of today players ? i.e training, nutrition, travel ease, drugs, offensive rule changes, money

Dude, I agree totally with you. 72 Dolphins were great...THAT YEAR. I really dont understand how you can say you cant compare teams. I really dont understand. You oyourself said they would get crushed by todays teams. I know the circumstances are different now, thats part of the comparison. The 72 Phins had a great YEAR. However, the dont stack up vs the years after them.

I cant fathom whats so hard to grasp here. By saying you cant compare because of anything perplexes me. why cant you compare teams from any time, any place? has there ever been a team assembled that could beat the 1993 Dream Team? I dont know. But are you saying we cant use the teams from 2010 because the players are taller/faster/stronger??

first off, i do not think the Dolphins are the greatest of all time... i don't think it's close... many teams along the way would beat them, if such a hypothetical scenario were possible... and yes, virtually all teams from some point in the 90's (or 80s) would probably beat them more than 50% of the time...

but... how is it even conceivable for any of us to know where the line is drawn?  and i don't just mean a line like... "all teams after 1982 would all beat the 72 Dolphins"... but what about Coaching?  or heart?  or scheming? 

do we give any credit to a team for the fact that they pioneered a certain Offensive or Defensive scheme that was revolutionary when it was done, but which is standard for every team in the league now?  are they just shit out of luck?

i remember around 1985 there was a lot of talk about whether or not the 85 Bears or 84 49ers were better than the Dolphins... according to you, it was a completely idiotic argument even back then, and it is also an idiotic argument to ask if the 85 Bears are the best Defense of all time... according to you, that 85 Bears defense can't possibly be as good as even the 94 Cowboys or some such, let alone a defense today...

it may be valid, but it will never be resolved... Michael Jordan in his prime will never lace up against Kobe Bryant in his prime... and the 1972 Dolphins will never line up against the 2009 Oakland Raiders...

the only thing we KNOW is... Michael Jordan dominated his era like no other player has ever dominated their era... and the 72 Dolphins dominated their era like no other team has ever dominated their era...
