I starting betting sports in 1980 during what I regard as the heyday of ABC's MNF with Cosell and Meredith. Jimmy the Greek was also making his picks at CBS's pregame show when the league wasn't pretending that people don't wager on the games.
They mentioned how hot the Monday night home dogs had been week after week. Soon the linemakers made an adjustment and the positive EV evaporated.
The same thing happened in the NBA - announcers noticed how the altitude affected teams that had to play the next day after visiting DEN.
This was before the Internet, so what they said created an outsized impact. I am afraid the same things might be occurring now but much more quietly.
Covers gets hundreds or thousands of visitors a day as do other similar handicapping websites. We log on hoping to read sharp insights on individual games or general tips to improve our overall results. My fear is that linemakers/sportsbook managers/clerks are also on the lookout for valuable information.
A clerk working for Michael Roxborough might relay a shrewd observation and the resulting adjustment might hurt our EV for more than just one game.
