He will stink it up. Rumor in SF is that Shany was actually the mastermind behind his defensive schemes, or at least had a big hand in it. There are things Shanahan has said that suggest this to be the case. Saleh is a rah rah coach like Tomlin and some others, that might get you some wins, if you have the talent, but if you don’t it won’t get you far.

What you base your rumor statement on? You always supply the sources. Please do. Otherwise anyone can come up with any rumor.

The rumors were actually speculations, made by beat writers and those who follow the team, based on 1) things Shanahan has said about the defense and defensive schemes and 2) his close involvement with the defensive side (attending meetings, offering input) 3) the big changes the Niners made this year in their schemes when Saleh no longer had the horses he had last year (with the idea being that Saleh was not solely responsible for those changes). And if you look at his track record (Saleh has never really been a schemes type of coordinator) you can see why these speculations might be true.

Saleh looks like a real bonehead to me, dead from the neck up. He was hyped by the media coverage of him while he was cheer-leading from the sideline. It made for an entertaining optic during the games and football dilettantes were impressed by it.
I hope I am wrong but when you think of football geniuses in the NFL, images of guys like Bill Belichick, Andy Reid, Paul Brown, Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh, Joe Gibbs, Tom Landry (and some others) come to mind...all intense guys who didn't spend their time in a gym buffing up their abs and shining their bald heads with bees' wax hoping to be on the cover of GQ.
Those guys were into examining the fundamentals of winning football down to the last detail. They were NOT cheerleaders.
Noll's famous remark along those lines was: 'If I have to motivate you, I will fire you'.

Ditka's great Bears' D is the work of Buddy Ryan...end of story. The '46' defense was created by Ryan with 8 in the box and was something special as it put all kinds of pressure on the opposing QBs. On offense Ditka had IMO the greatest running back of all time and no doubt he added some tweaks and some pizzazz to their passing attack considering his background as a TE. He managed the loose canon McMahon well I guess...was he great...uh no. I admire him though and he sure is a tough guy.
Yeah, it is a team effort and even those I consider great had help but they are still a notch higher than these two as I see it.
Here are a couple of great quotes about the '46' defense:
To stop a passing game, you can't stop it unless you put pressure on it. Now some people are good enough to put it on with a three-man rush; well, we're not. In fact, I don't know whether we're good enough to put it on with a four-man rush. If we have to send eight, we'll send eight, but we're not going to let you sit back there and pick us apart.
I had to use every bit of knowledge and experience and wisdom I had to come up with game plans to attack this defense. It's really the most singular innovation in defensive football in the last twenty years.

Totally agree. Good post!

As much as I disagree about both - Parcells and Ditka's place in the pantheon of the great coaches (I lived those moments as a young man who was breathing sports and didn't even come near betting) - I can't say I'm not enjoying the conversation. Go and try to find today someone who would argue the points the way you do. Same goes to @begginerboy
The joy of it is not lost on any of you althpugh I do feel lancer we are the same generation and begginerboy is way younger

Probably why he didn’t take the Detroit job. Didn’t want to give his hometown team another decade of losing.

Thanks for creating one. Thanks for the depth of analysis evaluating the coaches and their rightful contributions. As a Giants fan - I must say we hang on to what we have. And all we have lately to hang on to is Bill Parcells. And, same as ThePassanger69 - I too think Parcells can't be excluded from the list of the greats. Ditka? Only for keeping the McMahon together and giving Ryan enough space to work - those too are makings of greatness. Off course, when you draw nuclear weapons like Vince Lombardi and Don Shula - you can dismiss anyone, cause you can
And @begginerboy - thanks for daily contributions trying to give fellow bettors enough food for the minds to digest before pulling the trigger

Couldn't agree more.
Well. I agree that you - the Giants fans (and the Bears fans I guess) are the only ones thinking Parcells and Ditka belong on the same pedestal like Shula and Lombardi. But, to say the truth - the times have changed and I'd say even Andy Reid still has a distance to go to be there

Well, I know what you mean. Tommy Coughlin's wins already came in the era when we both know well the sports have changed. Those two games you're talking about - would have ended 9 out of 10 times in absolutely different result. Add to that the weight of Eli and here you go - the cake is divided into too many parts while in the era of Bill Parcells's wins - you could clearly see the blueprint.

I've never read about the speculation that Shanahan was behind the defense but Salah but what I have seen regardless of who was managing the defense was they couldn't make adjustments. Salah does have the endorsement of a lot of the defensive leaders in the 49ers locker room so take it as what it is but I think Jets do need a "leader". Curious to see how this works out.

Thanks, my man. I enjoy your threads as well. Agree about Parcells, but Ditka’s ego was too big to keep a good thing going. I would have loved to see Marino get another crack at the 85 Bears in the SB. I still feel sad about the fact we never got to see that matchup outside the regular season game where they handed the Bears their only loss. I have no doubt if that Miami/Ne game was played today, the NFL would pull all the stops to make sure Miami got through to the SB. Good luck on your plays this week.
