Seattle's Defense Relies On a Brazen Tactic: Rampant Interference
"They look at it and say, 'We may get called for one but not 10,'" said Mike Pereira
"They just seem to not care about the rules," said New York Giants wide receiver Louis Murphy
The Seahawks had the most pass-interference penalties in the league this season—13, or nearly one per game. Defensive pass interference, a spot foul that comes with an automatic first down, is called when a defender impedes a receiver while the ball is in the air. If the ball isn't airborne, grabbing a receiver more than five yards downfield merits a defensive-holding penalty. The Seahawks have 10 of those this season.
Pereira said aggressive pass-coverage teams like Seattle "test" referees early in the game with a few potentially obvious pass-interference infractions. "They want to see what kind of tone the officials are going to set," he said, adding that he expects to see a couple of penalties called but also the usual brand of Seahawks grabbing.
The Seahawks defense is only good at one thing. They play the officials, not the game. We will see how this works out for them this weekend with Gene Steratore and crew.

My question would be why isn't every team playing like this in their secondary then? Steratore has the fewest p.i calls of any ref in the nfl this year by the way, but with so much attention being brought to this it wouldn't surprise me at all if he calls a few sunday. Overcompensation, this is great pr by the niners by the way.

I rewatched the niner/seahawks games today and there is definitely mugging going on. I am thinking that they are putting the onus on the refs. Nobody wants to see the refs call 4 or 5 PIs during a game, and everyone knows it, including Seattle and including the Refs.
I am worried that the refs are going to give out a big PI call against Seattle (justified), then swallow their whistle the next 1 or 2 times because they don't want to affect the outcome too much.
It is an interesting strategy, and I really do believe it is a strategy. Harbaugh already said something publicly about how the game will be affected by how much the refs let Seattle's secondary get away with...
I'm hopeful that the league wants SF in the super bowl again, and the refs are instructed to call it if they see it. If so, this could be a 49er blowout. If not... nail biter.

Having literally one of the best secondaries I've ever seen in my life definitely helps.
If you ever watch what their defenders do to receivers, you may not think they are that great. It's not their talent that is great, it's their unethical strategy.

I like teams that push the envelope like this. Reminds me of Louisville fouling their way to a NCAAB title last year.
No that was Luke Hancock singlehandidly erasing TB3's great performance and what will likely be Spike's career game only as a frosh. Oh yeah and having the best/deepest team team in the NCAA last year certainly helped. Dieng down low as always was a diff maker with what like 9-8-6 WTF and am a Maize and Blue fan since 89, so that's just not true as they were the better team my friend.

- Richard sherman is the best CB in football. Mayyybe a tie with Joe Haden, but Sherman is slightly better
- Be glad they dont have Browner. He is prolly a top 5 CB, no question top 10.
- Maxwell is their #3 corner, and would be a #1 on more than half the league. Thurmond, their #4 corner would start on any team in the NFL, other than Seattle
- Earl Thomas is arguably one of the best Free Safeties in the league
...Yeah, uh thats pretty unreal. I see pass interference every game not called. Receivers getting held and mugged 10 yards down the field. I'm sure the Seahawks are the only team in the league being 'unethical'

Offensive lineman hold on damn near every play. IT'S FOOTBALL. It's impossible to block a pass rusher with 4.6 4.7 speed. But they only call the ones that are obvious which is fine. Why should all the rules help the offense only? Seattle corners are physical and if the receivers don't like it man up and get open. You don't just get lucky and end up with 28 ints in a season. These dudes fly around making plays. I'm sure jerry rice, chris carter got held on plays. I don't see them making excuses. IT'S FOOTBALL IF THE REFS WANTED TO THEY CAN CALL A HOLD ON EVERY PLAY. Do you want to watch a game where a flag is thrown every play?

So you all disagree with the article? The 'Hawks defenders don't test the officials on every play, and play PI on almost all their plays, hoping and knowing they will get called on a limited amount of them?

this is football a physical game..... Seattle is great cuz their secondary is huge and they beat up the receivers within the rules. yea they might press the issue a little but who cares. Its refreshing to see defense like that in todays NFL. Like Deion said Seattle has the best secondary since deions san fran team

You clearly didn't read the article. That's the problem, they don't do it within the rules most of the time. They just know they can manipulate the rules. You think refs are going to call 5-10 PI in a game? Of course not, and Seattle knows that too.

Most people expecting these two teams are gonna play it close this weekend, one PI call can be the difference. You don't need 5-10 PI calls to change the game.

I agree - I think seattle cb's test the refs to see what will be called and what isn't.

Understood, even if there are 5-10 PI penalties, the refs will never call that many in one game. Seahawks lead the NFL in pass intereference penalties with 13. That's barely one a game. Although there's no real way to measure, I would argue that they probably lead the league in missed PI penalties also.
Their game plan is that the one PI they expect to get in the game, is a small price to pay for the other 5-10 they get away with.
