About the SF 49ers under Mike Singletary :
I offcially recognize the debut of Mike Singletary as head coach of the SF 49ers after the team's bye in the 2008-2009 season .
This is when with proper time to prepare the 49ers became his team .
Prior to that bye, the now famous game against Seattle took place and it served as a statement of what the coach would expect from this team .
The statement was made at halftime when the players got to see where the sun never shines ,
during the game when Vernon Davis was sent to the showers following a stupid 15 yard penalty ,
and after the game with an emphatic post-game conference detailing his philosophy as a coach which mirrors his legendary playing style .
That game where both J.T. O'Sullivan and Shaun Hill shared duties established the 49ers QB of the future , and the end of both J.T.O'Sullivan and eventually Mike Matrz .
After the bye , his message clearly entrenched in the psyche of his players and with adequate preparation his record follows :
A 5 point loss @ Arizona ...( L 24-29 )
nearly winning the game in the end .
A 19 point win vs St Louis ( W 35-16 )
an expected win @ home vs a weaker opponent , but still impressive in the 49ers total dominance over their division rivals .
A 13 point loss @ Dallas ( L 22-35 )
a tough road game against a superior team with much more firepower .
Importantly , SF stayed in the game outplaying and outscoring Dallas in the second half .
A 10-3 win @ Buffalo
With West Coast teams perenially struggling in the Eastern Time zone , this victory showcased a defensive gem picking up an offense that only attained 12 first downs , rushed for net 62 yards and passed for a net 162 yards.
A winning attitude was established doing whatever it takes to get the job done .
A 24-14 win @ home vs the NY Jets
A solid win vs a winning team who was coming in with an 8-4 record and in the middle of a heated battle within their division .
A 5 point loss @ Miami ( 9-14 )
A tough battle against the eventual AFC East champions ,
a team that won 9 out of their last 10 games down the stretch losing only to New England in that span .
Also , the offense clearly outplayed Miami ( 24-11 on first downs , easily outrushing and outpassing them . )
A failure to put the ball in the endzone ultimately costs SF the game .
That being said , SF did all the scoring between these teams in the second half showing no signs of quit and covered the spread .
A 17-16 win @ St Louis
This time it was St Louis offense that outplayed SF , and the steady Shaun Hill threw 3 interceptions .
In the end , it amounted to an ugly win on the road , but one that in the recent past would have surely resulted in a loss .
This game capped a stretch where the Sf 49ers defense gave up
3, 14, 14, and 16 points ( an average of only 11.75 points in that 4 game stretch ) showcasing the defensive minset of their hall of fame coach . ( as a player )
Finally ,
a 27-24 win @ home vs the Washington Redskins
This game again showed the never quit attitude of this team coming back from a 17-7 deficit at halftime and outscoring Washington 20-7 in the second half .
Since that bye last year , San Francisco finished the year going 5-3 SU and losing by an average of 7.7 points .
With the 2 victories to start the year , San Francisco is now 7-3 SU during the last 10 games played under Mike Singletary .
This game @ Minnesota represents the toughest test thus far for the 49ers , but you can be certain that the players and their coach will leave it all on the field .
It should be noted , that Arizona suddenly exploded after losing against the 49ers , and the dominating performance by Seattle over St Louis was quickly dismissed when Seattle was humbled last week by Mike's crew.
San Francisco's defensive unit solidiffied their play to start this season by only giving up 16 & 10 points vs Seattle & Arizona for an average of 13 points a game .
