one of the world's biggest Steelers' fans and I've got alot on NE. Here is why:
1) with both Bell and Bryant out, NE can put 3 guys on Brown and there is no explosive playmaker to fear. Marcus Wheaton and Heath Miller are not #2 and #3 options. As #4 and #5 options they are effective but not in this case.
2) Pitt spent all of preseason transitioning away from the Lebeau 3-4 blitz defense to cover 2. Shamarko Thomas has been giving up huge plays all preseason. There will be huge early season growing pains for Pitt trying to play cover 2. They did not play much blitz 3-4 so I wouldn't expect the cover 2 was a temporary experiment. They are going to run it out live. Thomas has never played. He's replacing Polamalu and early returns do not look good. Until proven otherwise he's going to be targeted and he does not look comfortable playing deep.
3) Lawrence Timmons has not played for 3 weeks with a toe injury. I'm sure he will be out there but how effective?
4) Losing Pouncey is never a good thing for them
5) Tomlin is an average NFL coach. Not saying he is terrible but asking him to go into NE on their night and keep this close is too much. There is a fear of a garbage touchdown but I see NE in the 30s easily and Pitt without 2 tremendous offensive weapons in Bell and Bryant just don't have enough to put up more than 17.
6) No matchup for Gronkowski especially if they try to put a hobbled Timmons on him.
With either Bryant or Bell this would be a no play but not with both out. It's been a horrendous offseason for Pitt and I wouldn't look for good football out of Pitt until week 5 when Bryant comes back. Games 3 and 4 will be tricky because Bell will be back. Maybe another wide out emerges during those games but Bryant is an irreplaceable talent in my opinion.
