Catches like this were almost never made decades ago because all receivers went bare-handed (ya know, natural without any 'assistance').
I didn't play WR at any significant level but I did play and some of these catches are impossible without gloves.
ODB's end zone catch would have NEVER been made in a billion years bare-handed.
That catch you just saw? Would never be made bare-handed. In negative degree weather???
Honestly, these gloves function as a mini-steroid for these receivers. They're great and then for the very special ones the gloves put them at an elite level (or in ODB's case, a near super-human level).
But make no mistake, these catches were never made because players never wore gloves designed to help you make these types of catches.
This doesn't even speak to whatever 'stick-um' adhesive they are using on these gloves that the NFL doesn't have any rules to check for.
The point is, all this Ooooohing! and Ahhhhing! for catches that are only possible because of modern technology. Stop being so quick to credit the player with every aspect of a catch.

Scal, I understand your point but I also think you are not giving enough credit. Not only was it a one hand catch but he had to jump five feet to get it and then come down with it knowing he is over the middle and a hit could be coming not to mention holding on to it in this weather. Dude it's 20 below!! Lastly, have you watched the NFL this year? How many passes thrown right to receivers, in their hands, in their guts, sometimes almost handed to them and they drop them? Sometimes it's MORE amazing the ones they drop vs the one hand grabs like the one your referring too.

Not disagreeing but just wonder why there aren't more catches like the two you refer to if it's just technology? Actually, love reading your insights and follow many of your plays.

@rakets - I understand there are a million drops too.
But as far as jumping high for the catch, that athleticism would still be there gloves or not and I definitely credit him for leaping to the height of the ball with perfect timing.
But years ago, that ball bounces OFF the hand and then you have to make that catch with a defender draped on you which in all regards would be more impressive than with the one handed catch with the gloves!
@hawk Payne - glad someone understands this!
@bet - well you need the opportunity, lots of times the ball is thrown more within the vicinity of two hands or far out of reach so the opportunity for an ODB Miracle just isn't there. It doesn't come around as often as people think.
And I would like to add that ODB has some of the biggest receiver hands in NFL history. Not faulting him for that but when you add gloves to that???
@bws - Exactly
