Gutsy call and he wanted the the win ...risk reward I guess ...he sees that chargers can't do anything and jags is doing everything 2nd h..he was playing with house money.

Nick Bosa's second temper tantrum drew his second unsportsmanlike conduct flag and that resulted in the football being placed at the 1-yard line.

Pederson knew he would need a drive at the end of the game regardless and he knew that SD wasnt going to stop him - if he needed a TD (down by 4) he would get it. On the other hand if he only needed a FG to win (down by 2) that would be all the better.
All in all, Pederson was confident he could get a TD on the last drive if he needed, so he didnt care if they failed the 2pt conversion.

@Tyroneshoes
Even if they made that conversion, they are still 2 points behind. if they do not covert that they will be 4 points behind instead of 3 (a FG), which is more manageable.

If that is the case then there is more reason to go for 1 points ... it is easier to plan for either a FG or a TD than just a TD. It is also put a lot more pressure on the team if they need a TD to win at the end.

The moment JAX convert that 2-points ... Chargers' backers have no chance to cover the spread.

That missed 40 yard FG by Dicker loomed large in the 4th quarter. What a choke job and it also confirms a suspicion of mine that Herbert in crunch time comes up very small. Have seen him under-perform in other big games in crucial situations. Yeah, he has a bonehead for a coach. Tough to be on the losing end of that meltdown. Sheesh

This is the part you miss. The psychological human factor. When they went for 2, the players saw that the coach trusted them and it was a boost in their confidence. When they converted, everyone in the stadium knew JAX was going to win and it broke SD’s spirit.

@GreasyFat
Does not make football logic sense in my opinion ... everyone would go for 1 and down by 3 so a FG would tie it.

This was a great call because A) The penalty moved the ball to the 1 yard line putting the QB sneak in play, and B) Jags had all the momentum so want to set up a scenario where the team could win with a FG at the end instead of potentially tying with FG and allowing Chargers to reset going into OT.
I thought Doug Petersen got outcoached early by Staley but not pounding the ball on the ground more consistently and feeding into Staley's zone coverage which was pressing the short throws. But Petersen adapted.

That coach has a lot of balls and great instincts , he did it to the great Patriot team in the SB as well. Damn good coach and the Charger kicker choked big time .
