Hard hockey, hard checks, but yet penalties..My opinion but get your damn head up and it wouldn't happen. Please do not soften this sport like football.

@GASportsDoc
There were actually way more power play opportunities in the 80s and 90s than there are today. Power plays are exciting… no matter what side of the PP your team is on. We need more of them not less.

@P33PGame
No problem with PP's...but make the penalty legit.
@hart31
Done for the day...won with Canes and Caps. That's enough for me.

So essentially figure skating with the addition of random power plays for no real reason at all? Got it, sounds awesome lol. In the 80s and 90s it was a completely different sport, so comparing that sport to this shit is just ridiculous.

@Polar_Bear
That’s not what I’m saying. I hate the new beer league rules. I miss when forwards had to earn their spot in front of the net. I miss the fighting and big hits. That stuff needs to come back. What I don’t like is when guys are getting blatantly tripped, held or interfered with and the refs just keep the whistles in their pockets after obvious infractions. The Kings got away with about 4 or 5 that I counted tonight. I was on the Oilers large so perhaps there’s a little bias there but there was some obvious stuff that was “missed”.
It wasn’t just that game though. Lots of games have had piss poor reffing… either calling ticky tack BS or missing completely obvious stuff. I don’t like the way the NHL and the NFL have gone in the past couple decades. I grew up on tough, gritty late 1980s and 1990s sports when even the NBA had some toughness to it. So no I’m not for pussifying the sport. Just call the obvious stuff and let the players battle especially in front of the net.

You might want to go check gaa for each year, I was kind enough to provide it for you. 90s hockey was absolutely incredible stuff, more of everything, including offence. No comparison in that hockey to this crap we’re watching now. Nobody loved watching the devils except devils fans but even their battles with messiers rangers and the legion of doom were incredible and memorable. Despite the goalies the goalies were sooo much better too, not giant cardboard cutouts with 200 pounds of equipment on that just try to block the net with position.

The thing about entertainment is it’s all relative to the viewer. Some people may love this new world hockey over how it used to be and that’s their journey, there’s no right or wrong only individual preferences and opinions. One thing that’s a fact though is it’s a completely different thing than what it once was, just like all the major sports.

Edmonton and NYI each won 4 cups in the 80's Islanders 4 in a row.
In the 90's most of the finals were sweeps.
The hockey might have been better back then but teams were way more dominate than they are now. Winning the Cup is wide open this year which to me makes it way more exciting.

NHL is still a good product. Although compared to when I grew up watching it is a spoiled gen whatever pay me money and I will sit out if my toe hurts. Gordie Howe was one of the 10 toughest and maybe the best player to ever play. He would drop gloves at 35 years old and destroy anyone in a fight. Players I watched wore no helmets face guards and stood toe to toe like a real man.
With only 12 teams you had the best of the best playing. Having no front teeth was a badge of honor. With 3 officials on the ice as opposed to the now 4 more calls were missed. Also instant replay did not exsit. So this waiting 5 min for an idiot in New York to make a call on 147 angles on a camera was not around.
Yes calls were and always have been missed. The game has changed with the times. How many kids are playing outside today? Pogo stick, squirt gun, slingshot, cops and robbers etc. NONE. They sit inside on a device while both parents work and a stranger raises them. Sports are now all organized playdates. Not meet up on a frozen pond and play and duke it out.
