What would the game be like without the lines, icing, offsides, and all that.
Honest question here from a guy who is a recreational hockey viewer. What ugliness does the offsides call and the lines prevent, what would the game turn into if anyone could just be anywhere they wanted like basketball basically

In the roller hockey league I play in, we play 4 on 4, no offsides. If you have a good goalie and reasonable defenders, you can cheat the winger around the center ice line and have them open for a breakaway relatively easily. Usually that only happens if you're down and need to sacrifice for some offense.
No icing kind of sucks because a team can theoretically just dump it constantly if they're winning by 2+
