unfortunately thats what i remember most, the fraser incident.
1)San Jose just completed it's first season in the NHL. 2)The Anaheim Mighty Ducks Movie was a major hit at the box office at the beginning of that hockey season. 3)Anaheim had just been awarded their hockey franchise which would commence beginning the following season. 4)The Gretzky "trade" was finally paying off in California. 5)Bruce McNall (smuggler of art antiques and convicted felon) was the owner of the Kings. 6)Lawyer Gary Bettman was in his first season as NHL commissioner after being groomed for the position by his mentor, Lawyer David Stern. 7)The season marked the biggest ever marketing push in California by the NHL in the history of the league. 8)Kerry Fraser was the referee in over half of the Kings playoff games and reffed every pivotal game in any of the Kings series, including the one in which the Leafs had them on the ropes when the whole world except for Fraser (who was staring right at the play) watched Gretzky carve up Dougie Gilmours face and bloody it.
Montreal was awaiting the winner, and not a single hockey soul in America (generalizing) would have watched the epic all Canadian classic between the Leafs and Habs on the biggest hockey stage of all.
I have never been a Leaf fan but the new NHL boss and little Jewish lawyer from New York stuck his weiner right in their ass as far as I'm concerned. I watched that whole series and felt the Leafs got shafted on calls the entire series.
The lion and the tiger may be more powerful, but the wolf doesn't perform in the circus.

For the record, the above was nothing against the Kings, they were just playing hockey, and very good hockey. But I do believe the NHL gave them every possible opportunity to succeed that season. It's not fair to them but that did turn me off the franchise a bit.
As a kid I loved watching the old Kings in those banana yellow jerseys, and the purple grapes on the road. Rogie Vachon in net with the triple crown line of Dionne, Simmer and Taylor tearing up the league. I still can't believe they ever let Butch Goring get away.
I sat up late that one amazing night and watched the Miracle On Manchester Street as they overcame that 5-0 deficit to the Oilers in the playoffs and won 6-5. To this day that is one of my best hockey memories.
