I don't pretend to know much about them. I found out a buddy of mine had started buying/selling cards from all sports about a year ago and was doing well with it. Its a lot to learn what to look for from eah sport in terms of brand, collection, series, set whatever, but he knew I was a hockey guy so he said to concentrate on Young Guns.
I bought a few cases for fun but didn't come across anything noteworthy--maybe one or two somewhat decent ones.
But I started looking on eBay at some of the recent stuff and its crazy the prices of cards from guys who have yet to do anything in their careers. I remember cards used to be somewhat cheap and then they'd go up if the guys career started trending up....these seem to explode immediately.
I really don't know what's which is the lesser of two evils: 
Sports card "investing" or "investing" in betting sports..
There's a lot of economics with trading cards. Supply and especially demand. Lower supply (limited production/run of a card set) = good BUT more costly cards which are an initial upfront risk.
Just because a card is listed at $100 doesn't mean that it'll fetch you $100. In essence, it's worth what somebody is willing to offer you for that card.

The big players are usually the only ones that make money in it, long-term. 12 months ago there wasn't anywhere close to the market that there is right now. 12 months from now...who knows??
