Ovechkin is the league leader in Empty Net goals. I'm not disputing the value of an empty net goal which ends the hopes of the opposition tying the game. I have 1 question that i hope someone can answer. Why is Oveckin on the ice at the end of the game? He's not very strong defensively? He doesn't win faceoffs and he not a second option if/when the main faceoff man is tossed. He doesn't kill penalties and the extra man at the end of the game is the equivelent to a powerplay. In my opinion the only purpose is in an attempt to pad his stats. I wonder, maybe he hopes to have the all-time empty net goal record. I guess, given that the Caps are such a strong team they can afford to have a liability on the ice in an attempt to pad his stats. I also wonder if this approach might cost them in their quest to win the Cup but maybe BigB will come to his senses....
