Two elite teams clash tonight as the Avalanche welcome the Penguins to town. Pittsburgh are locked in as the #2 seed while Colorado sits in fourth but with a great chance to improve to third and potentially second (1 point back of third with 2 games in hand and 2 back of second even games).
Both of these teams are on back-to-backs and so I place weight upon those situational statistics:
Pittsburgh B2B (10-5) 4-2 off a loss
Colorado B2B (4-3-1) 2-3 off a win
Pittsburgh's depth certainly plays a role in their ability to play while on B2Bs whereas Colorado seem to be average and even struggle off of wins.
Though they have less to play for, Pittsburgh are fresh off of a blowout loss and will look to regain some much-needed momentum as we enter the playoffs. Colorado, conversely, are fresh off of a blowout win by the same score that Pittsburgh lost (4-0).
Fleury @ Pepsi Center: 2-0-0 (1.68 GAA)
Varlomov vs Pittsburgh: 2-1-0 (3.33 GAA)
Considering the difference in their performances off of back to back games, the fact that Pittsburgh lost 4-0 yesterday and Colorado won 4-0 with the potential (Starter?) advantage in net, I will be recommending the:
Pittsburgh Penguins (+115)

pens have no motivation... avs on the very hot streak... i like avs better
IF you watched the Penguins game @ Minnesota last night, "NO motivation" was obvious. Bylsma NOT chancing another injury to one of his "top guns" when they are "locked in" to the 2nd seed in the East

I think Pittsburgh will surprise with intensity after being blown out considering how they have consistently bounced back throughout the year and do not want to limp into the playoffs. Colorado seem a little too confident as Roy's words after yesterday's blowout win illustrated, "we dominated." The Ave's are motivated but far from desperate as they have games in hand. They were fortunate too beat the Rags and after blowing out an elite team I think they come out flat and lose 3-1

After watching the Dallas game and seeing that hapless team blow it to the Panthers (lost 3 units on it), I am hoping the on-paper no-brainer game points to Avs at home.
20 units on Avs. Bit of a chase, however liked this pick all day. Like Avs at home, half of pitt team sitting/injured, Avs having more to play for tonight, and the big no-brainer lost already (i.e. Dallas to the fricking panthers ).

With or without Crysby, the Avs are the pick. Varlomov is going for the team record for wins in a season previously held by Roy. Pens have 0 to play for.

You forgot this is hockey and every game is a coin flip no matter what players play or who needs what.
