I'm going to post a detailed ashes preview next month but as of right now, the green and gold do look a poor value fav and its debatable whether ponting will start as captain, should be a cracking series in any case
so apart from being at home, would you take the even money on the aussies?
Because an England team hasn't played its best cricket on an Ashes tour to Australia in a long time. The conditions (heat ect) the crowds, the length of the tour have tended to sap the poms of their mojo out here pretty much since 87' (their last series win here).
Mind you the fact they were playing arguably some of the strongest test teams of all time played its part as well, but its always appeared to me that England just aren't comfortable over here.
The dynamic of their group has changed a lot in recent years though. The days of the old stodgy, rigid looking characters (the alex stewarts, phil defreitas ect) they once had are no longer and now they have a young group that looks a lot more energetic and skillful.
But the cracks are already starting appear, Jimmy Anderson has broken down and will be out for a while (?) and it seems a bit unclear where Kevin Pieterson's head and form are at. The poms need KP to be going well out here because I think he has the Aussies get a bit spooked by him in an almost similar way that Tendulkar and Lara used to paralyse our bowlers.
So really on talent and cricket ability alone, I think England ticks more boxes than Australia at the moment. Our cupboard looks the barest its been for decades in terms of depth and our best XI is a shaddow of the Aussie lineups of the recent past. But with revenge on their minds, conditions in their favour and with England questionable in terms of their ability to hold it together in Australia, we might just be able to "muscle" our way to series win.
