Belated start to the round - I've been unable to place many bets this weekend. I would have been all over the Gold Coast, but alas...
The Newcastle Jets should surprise many this season. Last season was a write-off no doubt, but they have since become only the second Australian side to make the 2nd round of the ACL, something Sydney, Melbourne and the CC have been unable to do.
If Fabio Vignaroli can stay fit, he will prove to be near signing of the year - the guy is genuinely classy. They have a defensive unit as good as any in the League, with Costanzo, D'Apuzzo, Topor-Stanley, Milicevic, Elrich et al capable of holding sides out.
Will be interesting to see what Branko Culina can bring to the side. IMO, they should make the finals, albeit in the lower half of the top six. It's imperative though that they start the season well.
As far as today's game goes, the Phoenix look far less potent to me without Smeltz.
