Question from an American regarding Aussie rules football betting

Just curious, I don't know squat about Australian football or rugby but I am a gambler and will place a bet if it wins me money.  My question is at my sportsbook, they have the point spreads and MLs for the AFL. I tend to play moneyline parlays a lot in hoops, US football, baseball, hockey, tennis, soccer whatever. A double digit point spread, e.g -13, tends to be pretty safe ML pick in American football for the fav. I want to pick a couple of the ML Aussie football games like the ones below for today -
 
  Carlton Blues -9   -150      
  Geelong Cats -30½   -650         
 Hawthorn Hawks -12½   -180   
 St Kilda Saints -12½   -170          
 Adelaide Crows -16   -220  
 
Geelong Cats at -650 seems like a win but is Hawthorne -180 or Adelaide -220 or all the others okay? I don't know if 12 points is just one score (such as 7 points in American football for a touchdown). Again, just interested in the moneylines for the straight up win and not the spreads.

A double digit pointspread in rugby tends to be pretty safe but not necessarily in aussie rules.

The safest 2 plays for the moneyline, IMO of the above are Hawthorn and St Kilda. Geelong should definately win but too short on the moneyline.

I'll be playing Hawthorn -12.5

Be careful with the ML's in Aussie Rules Akeem as there can be several injuries in a game due mostly to players being 'hit' from all angles within the rules of game.  Thats not saying that other sports aren't as tuff, but IMO Aussie Rules is one of the most taxing team sports going around, and thus more unpredictable, and as we know one stuff up in a parlay makes people angry.
 
Of the above if I had a choice I would take Geel & Adel  ML's.

Tozer, Miracle, thanks for the explanation and info. I will be adding them to my parlays today. Played Carlton -150 early morning today and saw they won 111-74. Just don't understand the scoring but certainly agree that it is a tough sport without the protective gear worn by American footballers and prone to injuries that can change the game.

Aussie rules football...................
 
Great game, and also razor sharp point spreads.  Similar to the NFL of how spreads can get turned over in last seconds.
 
No lead (let alone spread) is ever safe.
 
Not an easy sport to cap unless you always are "expecting the unexpected."
 
Any of the 16 teams can win on any given day........just like the NFL.  These guys are elite athletes.

Rugby union, especially internationals, are easier to parlay off big chalk MLs.

Thanks for the info, Clay. Gmanea, I did read most of the wiki link. I had no idea that only the American NFL had a better avg attendance of any professional sport in the world than AFL (over 38,000 avg).
 
I did add Geelong, Adelaide and St Kilda to my parlay and they all won but looking at the score on foxsports au website I saw Geelong and St Kilda had to overcome double digit deficits before eventually winning.Neither covered the point spread. Surprised with Geelong as a 30 pt fav. Interesting game though.

Claycourt, I have to respectfully diagree with you here.  I think AFL lines are the softest in professional sport.  It is not uncommon to be off by 50-some points and not bat an eyelash.  If the NBA, a similar-scoring sport, was 50-points off a spread, it would be outrageous.  Additionally, wrong teams are favored on almost a weekly basis (Bulldogs, Tigers, and Dees, imo this last round).  Plus the only team that can win on any given day is Geelong, the rest are big ?-marks, and the Dees are just about a shoe-in for a loss.  I do agree, though, that leads are never safe and goals can come fast and furious.

Again, have to respectfully disagree here unless you are talking Australia and New Zealand, who never lose against minnow teams.  Otherwise, especially Northern Hemisphere sides, are a serious scare for the upset.  France and England the main culprits.
