I'm not sure if this thread will get much traction but the FIBA Qualifiers are commencing tonight and I for one am excited. Should be a great Olympics with what looks like a very second-tier, albeit still powerful, team fielded for the USA.
I love me some international basketball. Let's make some money
Futures
Croatia to win Italy Qualifying Tournament @ $4.20 (Sportsbet) 1.25 units
Serbia to win gold at Olympics @ 36 (Sportsbet) 2 units
No explanation required. We are winning it.
Game Day One
Got quite a few leans but not liking too many of the games enough to bet those leans.
Greece v Iran
Greece post an all-star starting five here while Iran will rely heavily on Haddadi inside. Giannis has been in fine form while Koufos might just be Greece's most important player - dude is a beast on the glass.
Take Greece -24.5 @ 1.85 (Ladbrokes). Line may seem large but it suggests the Greeks win each quarter by about 6. I think they do at least that and will win 2 quarters by double digits.
France v Philippines
I have no idea why this line is only -17.5. Batum is confirmed and he'll join a team with Parker, Diaw, King Joffrey, all of whom he gels with so well. Throw in arguably Europe's best player De Colo and this is a blowout.
France -17.5 @ 1.83 (Bet365) Easy Money.
Turkey v Canada
Loving this Turkish value. Yes, Canada has some decent NBA players and arguably one star in Thompson but I think they are giving up far too many points here. Years of watching Turkey win clutch European basketball games has taught me they are a competitive, strategic team that won't be a pushover.
Looking at their roster, they have by far the biggest player on the court in Asik, who tends to step up for his nation. How he is played with Erdeh will be key, as will the play of Muhammed who is a legitimate European star. Kind of like a good Nate Robinson. Combined with decent wings who can shoot the ball, I like Turkey here.
Turkey ML @ 3.75 (Ladbrokes)
Turkey +8.5 @ 1.83 (Sportsbet)
Leans (not going on record)
Latvia -21.5 v Japan
Tunisia +30.5 v Italy
Peurto Rico +18.5 v Serbia (never bet against Serbia)
Good luck if you're betting!

I like Turkey too mate. But i got them with +6.5. They are also ranked higher than the Canadians. Lost by 6 last time they played Canada and won before that last start. Both team will make it thru their group.

Puerto Rico won the second half vs my boys Serbia last night and will ride that momentum into this game, which looms as a must win for them. I fully expect them to take care of business here and get out to a quick lead. Barrea is by far the best player on the court and he will do what Joseph did to Turkey tonight.
Puerto Rico -18.5 @ 1.83 (Sportsbet)
Czech Republic v Latvia
I was surprised that Latvia were favoured in this game. These nations are not that far apart in the world rankings and to my mind the Czechs field the better lineup. The stalwart Jiri Welsch, beast 6'7 PG Satoransky who plays for Barca and Vesely who can jump out of the gym. Latvia rely heavily on the shooting of particularly Bertrands but I think these players would be known to the Czechs very well from the Euroleague.
Czech Republic +2.5 @ 1.85 (Ladbrokes)
Italy v Croatia
This is my value play. I'm all over Croatia and the trio of Bogdanovic, Hezonja and Saric. Each of them are very, very good at what they do and I'm not sure Italy will have the legs to keep up with the Croatians after playing a day ago (though they cruised to victory). I don't really rate Barg or Belinelli and think they can be shut down.

Canada should dominate here and even if they rest players, I think their second five is still better than Senegal. Unlike Puerto Rico's second five last night.
Canada -22.5 @1.90 (Sportsbet)
Philippines v New Zealand
As a basketball fan, Philippines' play last night was great to see. As a basketball purist, however, they showed a very limited, 1-on-1 offense that wasn't all that impressive. Against a much smaller NZ which boasts strong players in the form of Webster (x2), Abercrombie and Vukona, and who witnessed the Philippine threats live last night, I see no justification of the big line. NZ are not intimidated by the Philippines; I think they genuinely feel like the favourites in this matchup.
NZ Tall Blacks +7.5 @1.8 (Ladbrokes)
I'm not taking NZ to win but it wouldn't surprise me.
Greece v Mexico
Mexico lifted for a passionate victory against Iran last night but those feelings will be short-lived. Yes, Greece may rest players but I actually think this line is way too low regardless so must take it.
Greece -19.5 @1.87 (Sportsbet)
Croatia v Tunisia
See above. Add in that Croatia don't like losing and that they must win this game. Equals
Croatia -22.5 @1.87 (Sportsbet)
Definitely not taking Serbia -26.5 v Angola but I really want to. Let's just say I lean that way.
