By Ray Bentley -- The Los Angeles Avengers return to the playoffs after missing out on a dance card last year as they host the Utah Blaze on Monday night’s Russell Athletic AFL Wildcard Weekend. Kickoff is set for 10 p.m. ET at the Staples Center. Ironically, these teams played each other in the season finale last week at the Staples Center with Utah banging out a 47-37 win to snag the fifth seed in the American Conference. LA is the fourth seed.
This will be the fifth meeting between these franchises and the first time they have ever met in the playoffs. Utah has never lost to LA including a season sweep this year. Utah cranked up the defense last week as they forced six Avenger turnovers including four interceptions of LA’s QB Sonnie Cumbie. The Blaze burned LA with interceptions in the first five drives of the second half.
Neither of these teams has ever won a playoff game. Utah lost their only chance to Arizona in their inaugural season last year. LA coach Ed Hodgkiss has brought the Avengers into the playoffs four times but have yet to advance, losing all four.
