Maybe. Now the Bears have to pick the right replacement for the woeful Justin Fields. Are we sure who it is ? I'd be worried about the southern California guy.

That is where the smart money is and I hope the Bears get it right. NFL fans need franchises like the Lions and Bears to be competitive and in the conversation as good teams. The core of a very good team is already there.

While it might have been the best thing $$ & cap wise, i'm not convinced it will manifest itself in more wins on the pitch ( pitch also being one of the greatest card games invented ). They won 7 last year and it's gonna be interesting to see what # the books open their RSW total at.

@Biscuiteater1
Obviously, there is little point to making an RSW prediction right now because so much is yet to happen. However, if my mother forced me to do so, looking at their schedule and guessing they will have a green, young and NFL untested QB, I'll set the number at a probably aspirational 9.5. What do you think ?

@1129ken
I have mixed feelings about trading Fields. In year 3 of his career, he got really close to Lamar Jackson type #'s.
Ofcourse everyone is talking about his 10-23 overall record. But it's a team game the last time I checked. The Bears roster in Field's first 2 years was an abomination. In his second year that was expected, it was the tear down year, they finished last in the league for a reason.
Last year the arrow started to point up. They built the roster up. So far in this off season(through free agency and trades) they continued to build up in a precise manor.
It's kind of unfair to boot Fields out of the equation, and for peanuts. What the hell is a 6th rd pick going to do for you in 2025?
I thought that he continued to progress as a passer. Maybe I'm wrong. What he possess as a runner and scrambler can not be compared to anyone but Lamar.
I pray that they pick the right QB at #1. But if we're going off the history of #1 draft picked qb's in the history of the NFL, the percentages aren't good. They're almost as bad as winning the lottery.
My gut was saying to trade down again for a wealth of riches in draft capital. Then the roster could of been upgraded at unprecedented levels. I've referenced the 90's Cowboys when they fleeced the Vikings with the Herschel Walker trade. Was thinking something of that level.
Could of kept Fields. Could of drafted a qb later. Where is Pennix projected? Could of given Sam Hartman a try really late. Brady Cook of Missouri even. If Fields is in fact that bad, there's always another draft the following year, and they'd have the the picks in pocket.
As of now, after drafting someone at #1, they only have 3 more picks this year.
They should be good this year. The defense will eat. Win total probably around 8.5/9 I'd guess. But, a rookie qb(no matter who) will not lead this team to a SB. I believe that CJ Stroud is the only qb to win a playoff game in nfl history. Please check that I'm not certain.
Bears fans will have to wait till at least 2025 for any SB aspirations. If they can keep this newly built core together while they wait for the qb to develop.

Just checked Russell Wilson's rookie year. He won a wildcard game, then lost the next playoff game. Like CJ Stroud.
The Seahawks were able to win a SB because of that rookie contract. We'll see if the Bears can pick a guy like Wilson/Stroud.

Since 2001 only 2 QB's have won fewer than 20 games and lost at least 25 games.
They are now both on the Steelers
Russ Wilson 17-27
Justin Fields 10-28

Now to show how some stats can be misleading ...
Since 1950 there have only been 2 QB's to improve year to year, in each of their first 3 years (min 10 starts) in each of the following 5 categories;
Wins
Pass Yds
Completion %
INT %
Passer Rating
Those 2 QB's are ...
Josh Allen
Justin Fields

Sac and Huge--Hard to quarrel with facts, particularly those presented by two guys with proven track records on football intelligence. It may be that I just think teams that rely too much on the running quarterback have proven to be easier to defend in the playoffs. I watched the Bears a lot last year and they looked like a team that was getting very close to nasty. And now, with some seemingly astute off season moves, I think they are going to make noise this season. Obviously, how much noise will depend on how the QB decision works out. But I don't think they will suck regardless of the choice. I thought Fields left a lot to be desired last year. I think he is more Lamar than Mahomes. And while Lamar is one of a kind, and with all due respect to Hugh's illegitimate son, I think Harbaugh's all-in decision on him will never win a Super Bowl. I think their playoff loss to the Chiefs magnified the problem of falling behind in a playoff game with a team built to rely so much on a quarterback-led running offense in today's NFL. You could almost feel the panic on the Ravens sideline as they went down two scores, watched KC run clock and began to understand how precious each possession was going to be if they failed. In a 17 game season, and getting back to Biscuit's RSW question, I think 9-8 is a touch pessimistic for this year's Bear's. Sac is the man when it comes to the Bears, but I'll stick with my 9.5, juiced a touch to punish the Under bettors.

@1129ken
My reaction to Bears opening @ 9' would be to wait and if it dropped back to 8' then to put a buck on the over. Brother Ken make no mistake the main reason Ravens lost to KC was due to them getting away from the game plan that produced the best record in the NFL, not Lamar.

After missing a month Fields came back for the last 7 games in which they went 4 - 3 with the losses being by 8 - 3 - 5 and wins by 20 - 11 - 15 - 2. Of course these are only naked numbers but as i have said, he can be a very good qb if he has a good team behind him. jmo

@Hugh_Jorgan
That stat is quite outstanding!
How could there not have been any other qb's to have not improved, since 1950. Nuts.
Did you know, Troy Aikman's qbr in 11 seasons was worse than Field's in 3 years.
Hypothetically, if the Cowboys tried to trade Aikman, do you think that they'd get more than a 6th rd pick in return?
@1129ken
Good points. If the Bears season win total opened at 9.5, I probably wouldn't bet the under.

@Biscuiteater1
Biscuit---Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely not blaming Lamar per se. What I think I saw was a team doing exactly what you said---getting away from a game plan which, WHEN they could stick with it, made the Ravens the best team in the NFL. However, I think once they got down 2 scores, with the threat of Mahomes always looming to make it a near impossible 3 scores, the best regular season NFL team got away from what made them the best. They knew every possession was critical. They had put up only 7 points in the first three quarters, with nothing in the crucial third. So, down two scores and still only 7 that you've been able to put on the board. What are your options ? At some point, the fact that they themselves managed to possess the ball only 9:21 in the entire first half----as a running team no less----- starts to tighten their collective collars. Difficult NOT to abandon your established success plan at some point in favor of a quick score. So, no, I do not put it all on Lamar. I do put it on a decision to commit to a less multi-dimensional style of play that narrows your chances of winning when you're forced to play from behind, which is hardly a rarity in the playoffs.

Class act Ryan Poles, GM of the Chicago Bears kept his promise of doing right by Justin Fields. Fields only wanted to go to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fields ends up in Pittsburgh even though several teams showed interest in Justin.

@1129ken
I'm not totally disagreeing with your assessment of their psychology but keep in mind that being down 2 scores with one of the scores being a fg ( with the best kicker in the game ) is not the same thing as being down 2 tds. Ravens rb's touched the ball 6 times, 6 times man! Which as you pointed out led to KC controlling the ball for 37:30. If Harbaugh were a public official he would have been charged and convicted of malfeasance.

Fields just wasn't it in the passing game
Sure, he "improved" the past 2 years....but that was an insanely low bar to improve off of....I mean he was throwing for 80-120 yards a game....
He just lacks the vision required for an nfl qb...
He processes thru a read or 2 at most (or only looks at one side of field) and then its scramble time
I'm worried about hurts vision (he regressed last year) and he's shown so much more than fields has

Hard to believe Mel Kipersky was preaching Fields could fetch as high as the 8th overall pick in a trade not too long ago.
He's just a talking head puppet at this point in his career path,,,I wonder what RXistrash thinks about him being so wrong?

It's true, other teams had better offers for Fields. But Ryan Poles is a man of his word, and allowed Fields to go to the team he wanted to.
That is all. And obviously, hurt the team by doing so. But you know what, it's an honorable move. He "did right for Justin" as he put it earlier.

I’ll always remember those game where Justin Fields got me 40 points in fantasy football when he would run for over a hundred yards and score rushing touchdowns too .
got me to a sixth place finish and for that I thank him .
and I know that 6th place ain’t good but it’s one spot better than 7th where my arch rival Reggie finished . That fuckin’ piece of shit .
what’s my beef with Reginald you ask ? He cut in front of me in the lunch line in third grade once . Like I forgot about that shit . Fuck you Reggie you 7th place finishing motherfucker .
So blessings to that bandana wearing Gumby lookin’ fierce competitor Justin Fields and good luck in Pittsburg .
