What's up, Brody? Very good season. Very good playoff run. And even with the gentleman's sweep, very good series. The Mavs showed that as long as they have Luka, they will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come. Luka is only 23. When he is 28, once he slims down a bit, he will be a terror.
After a contentious series with the Suns, and our a toxic series with the Grizzlies, reestablishing a rivalry, I kind of feel like the Warriors and Mavs kind of had a Stepbrothers "Did we just become best friends?" moment. I lurked a bit in the Mavs subreddit. It was mostly all love. Same with the Warriors subreddit. When I would talk with friends, there was no Mavs hate. We all, to a person, were like, "F*CK Memphis." And I know the feeling is mutual.
So I look at this Mavs team and I ask, what's the next step?
Spence, DFS, and Bull•ock are good 3 and D complements to Luka. I'm also a fan of Maxi. I've read where some people think they need to add wing depth but I think the team is fine in this department, especially if THJ makes a comeback. I do not believe they should proceed with JB. JB will look to get paid somewhere. It should not be Dallas. What's the point of having a guy 6'7" run the offense if you're just going to pair him with a guy that's 6'1ish? If we look at Luka as the de facto point, any of those guys I mentioned make a good rotation and compliment to Luka at the off guard and small forward positions.
The elephant in the room is the frontcourt. Powell is non-existent, and bless his heart for coming back from injury. Bertens... I don't know how many years are left on that walking bobblehead's contract but it is an albatross. I know it would seem simple to say go after a splashy signing like Ayton but I'm not sure if salary cap permits. And I have a few better options.
#1. One need not look any further than across the court at one Kevon Looney. Kevon could probably be had for a steal but he'll likely command more than the Warriors can pay. He'd fit right in perfectly as a traditional #4 or small ball #5. He's checks the boxes of what Dallas needs. Rebounding and defensive versatility. He isn't crazy athletic since starting his NBA career with two hip surgeries but he has clearly become a force, and he gets it done with positioning, tenacity, and basketball IQ. He did not take a game off this season and shouldered the load in the key for a very undersized Warriors team. Plays well within a system and would make s great compliment for Luka.
#2. Jusuf Nurkic. Won't go too deeply into Nurk but he is a traditional center that doesn't stifle his own teams offense. If he can stay healthy he is a 16 and 10 kind of guy.
Both of these guys combined could be had for less than Ayton.

can't argue any of these points......for the longest time I didn't think we needed a big man to clog the lane for Luka until I watched the Dubs deploy Looney starting in game 3 and he torched us ever since. even when we were mounting that comeback last night it was Looney grabbing key offensive rebounds that basically squashed any chance of making this close. it was one after the other. as for JB, I somehow think we work out a deal that keep him here. even if its for only 3-4 years. a selfish player would likely want to run his own team but by all accounts he's not that. time will tell. of course we are hearing around here Gobert could be the answer but after that Jazz series I would have my hesitations based on his glaring limitations.
good season for sure taking out Utah who was one of the highest rated offenses coming into the playoffs and of course the number 1 seed and best record Suns. we just ran into a team that is firing on all cylinders right now and that zone really had Luka struggling to break it down off the dribble.

JB is fine in the offense, and seems to be a fan favorite. Defensively though, if the guy running your offense is 6'7", what's the point in having a guy on the floor who is 6'1"? Defensively.

none, but in Luka's absence everyone got to see what kind of player this guy could be given it was his team now. which makes me think they make it worth his while in the offseason. I'm no GM but this team is really really close and given the style they play and adding one more key piece I think it will help them eventually get over the hump. I agree with the assessment about Luka growing into his body. Prime Luka when he finally realizes diet is important will be unstoppable. some taking heads around here seem to think he will move on to other pastures when that happens. if so, would be a tragedy

Those names off the top of my head are free agents and affordable. You guys are a few players away. You just need a little big depth away. I think Powell's career is over. Bertens... And Boban... I love Boban, but it's almost like teams just have him as a mascot.
You guys have a good wing rotation. I like DFS, Spence, and Bul•lock but while the team feels young, and while they play with young legs, a lot of the core guys are 30ish. So you guys will have to figure out the best way to compete now while setting yourself up for Luka's prime a few years from now. Locking up Brunson now would be a mistake. Run it back with Spence, DFS, and Reggie. Hope THJ gives you something. Hope Kleber takes the next step. Any of the guys I named can be had for not too much of anything. Two of the three put you in the Finals.
